The author is a British journalist . with close personal ties to the road racing stan of the 19605 and '70s. His inside accounu of technical development, teatning and schctning among the big factories competing for world • championships and the talented riden, i,. fascinating. Change the names and ~es a little, and it would serve to describe what is happening today. The focus is on Europe and Japanese personalties. If you wonder what Yamaha paid Giacomo AgoStini to win Daytona, or what Hailwood exacted from Honda, it is all here, in British Pounds and dollars. Team·tactics and the Japanese attitude toward racing are exprained clearly. Intense racing • champions like Phil Read (whose mother taught him to ride) 'and the late Jamo Saarinen are found to have opposite personalties. The 'r>ook isn't all Yamaha :.... pictures and spc<;5 of the com~tition are thoughtfully provided. But nowhere, alas, is there a picture of the briefly patent Ya'hlaha V-4engine. . American dirt racing and ~otocross get short shrift in this volume, but there' is mention of Fumio lloh's impressive introduction of the brand at the 1958 Catalina GP.
