Hyde spent the day running with
new Kawasaki teammate Vic Ely. "Vic
and 1 had at it all day. 1 beat him in
the final tniles. He had me by one
point going into that last section, but
he got stuck in a traffic bottleneck and
1 beat him."
The traffic at 24 points was a five·
rider jam - defending National Champion Dick Burleson, Kawasaki's Ely,
Yamaha's1ohn Fern and Larry Roeeler
and overall A class winner Keen.
"I just flat tired out," said Burleson
a bit disgustedly. "I probably rode 10
tniles on the flat before replacing the
tube. Maybe 1 lost five minutes, but 1
made up some of that time in the fol·
lowing section. Looking back, 1 should
have ridden one more check since the
section was an easy one and 1 might
have lost only a minute or two. Unfortunately, that's hindsight. 1 didn't
have to gamble the tire would come off
.
thenm. "
Fero took vacation time to come to
the run. He is now out of R&D at
Yamaha and into the competition support program. "I hope I'll be able to
ride the rest of the series," said Fero.
"Right now Yamaha would rather, 1
didn't. 1 haven't been in the woods in
four months and it felt l{OOd getting
back into the swing of things." Fero
was the only other rider besides Burleson to score points in every National
last year.
Roeseler felt with a bit of luck he
could have been in the hunt. However,
he had a rough time before the second
check. "I lost some points that 1
shouldn't have. 1 had a spill because 1
didn't yell soon enough for the slower
riden to get out of the way. Still, 1 feel
good because this was my fint ride on
the 250."
There were funny stories as well as.
Bill Berroth was passing a friend and
did it the hard way. "I guess 1 wasn't
really concentrating 100 percent, .. said
Berroth. "I passed my friend - maybe
showing off a bit - and gave.him a
demonstration on the correct way to
centerpunch a pine tree. 1 wrecked the
headlight and front fender. It took me
a bit of time to get going again. It was
a silly mistake...
How long does it take to put together
an event like the Stone Mountain Na·
tional? "Too long," said Jim Spinks of
the sponsoring club. "You can't realize
the number of houn that are put in to
bringing something like this to a success·
ful finish. Once we finish the c1ean·up,
I'm going into hidinlt for a long time."
The club thanked Hi·Point Racing
Products and Husqvarna for their
•
product support of the event.
