TEN YEARS AGO dIi1 WESTERN UNITED STATES CHAMPIONS VIEWFINDERS MilLe Yam held off a last -lap move by Junior-ranked Kenny Robens to win an indoor shon track race in San Francisco's Cow Palace. Greg Hodga finished third. Yam took the Cow Palace series tille by thrtt poiDls over Dave HanJen. Al Kenyon. and Robens. Bill Urban was the first American rider to beat the Puch faClory assault on CMC mOlOcross events as he defeated Belgian Harry Evens at Claude Osteen's Cycle Park. II was not actually a defeat for Puch, however, because Urban was mounted on the spare bike the Europeans had. In other action, Mike Cram won the 250cc Senior class and Lan LaJ"llOn won the 500cc Seniors. Belgian Chriltian Gouverneur. one of the two Puch factory riders in the U.S., was the fim rider up and over Saddleback's infamous Matterhorn on a 125cc machine. Motorcycle Owners, Riders and Enthusiasts president RlUI Sanford wrote that, "We thought that this had died once and for all, last year. But I have received word from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that 'California is one of only eight states which have not yet enacted a motorcycle protective headgear statute. Secretary Volpe has asked Governor Reagan that a helmet law be sought in the 1971 legislative session. ,.. Indoor shon track racing at Monroe, WA, continued where it left off, with Steve Baker taking the 125cc Expert A class and then finishing second to -Randy Skiver in the 250cc Expert A class. Motocross racing in Austin, TX, saw 16-year·old Jack Hiclr..s take his 250 CZ to wins in both the 250cc and Open Expert classes. RACE..AY ~ Reg Pridmore was the Open GP winner over John McGillivray and Don Emde in an ACA road race at Riverside Raceway. Jerry Greene defeated Pat Evan. in 250cc GP, while Steve McLaughlin and his Honda 4 bested Pridmore's Norton in Open Production, K-88 TOPS THEM ALL! Stadium Supercross WINNERS choose Dunlop - 5 FINISHERS. 9 of top 10 Triumph-mounted Bill Budde won the 650cc Junior/Expert class in rough scrambles competition at Salinas. Husky rider Bob Grolli captured the 500cc Expert class. DeHesa Speedway in EI Cajon. CA, was the site of a motocross and a double win by Bill Silverthorn.
