Maki grabbed the second moto holeshot but Staten powered by on the
outside of Webco Hill. McCuistion,
Hardick and Yainaha rider Craig
Gormley rounded out the top' five in
the opening laps. Staten quickly established a huge lead while Tarantino
struggled through the pack after a
poor start.
At mid-point Tarantino had moved
into second behind Staten and Gall
was into third while McCuistion held a
safe fourth ahead of the Gormley and
Hardick battle. The top four positions
were set as were the overalls as Tarantino was uanble to reel in Staten before
the checkers.
500cc Pro
DG Yamaha rider Pete Snorteland
jammed into the lead as moto one of
the &OOcc Pros thundered up the start
hill. jeff jennings quickly moved his
Pro-Circuit/Moto-X Fox Husky into
second with Clint Hardick third and
Maico rider Don Griewe fourth.
Snorteland bobbled on lap two and
dropped to third as spectators turned
to watch Staten and Eric McKenna
work up through the slower riders and
into contention.
Staten needed the win to regain the
series lead from Maico rider McKenna
although McKenna needed only a
third place finish. Staten soon worked
into the 'front running foursome and
then blew past SnoneIand and Hardick
to claim second. Husky rider Marty
"Typhoon" Tripes powered into the top
half dozen and in short succession
passed Griewe, Yamaha rider Zoli
Berenyi, and Snorteland. Hardick
held off the hard charging Tripes for
several laps before slipping to fourth.
Staten closed on jennings and made
his pass as the final laps were ending.
McKenna was having a hard time
getting on track and could fmish no
higher than seventh as Staten grabbed
the win ahead of jennings, Tripes,
Snorteland and Hardick.
Snorteland again aced the start with
Staten second, jennings running thiid
and McKenna downfield and charging.
Staten outpowered Snorteland on the
uphill before Banzai Hill andlennings
followed. jennings slipped to the inside
and took away the lead as Tripes
moved into fourth.
Tripes soon nipped Snorteland and
blew past Staten. jennings slowed as
his exhaust pipe cracked and Tripes
dOlled in. Jennings managed to keep
the door shut for a couple laps bu~
Tripes and Staten both went past as
jennings stalled the engine in a slow
rum. jennings restarted and held onto
third as Snorteland motored in fourth.
McKenna's charge carried him to futh
at the checkers but left him a few
points down of the championship he
had come so close to winning. Staten
took the overall with Tripes getting the
I runner-up share of the purse ahead of
jennings, Snorteland and McKenna.
"I had some bad luck with flat tires
and gearboxes," recalled Saten later,
"but we hung in there and came back
to win!"
