Staten needed the win to regain the series lead from Maico rider McKenna although McKenna needed only a third place finish. Staten soon worked into the 'front running foursome and then blew past SnoneIand and Hardick to claim second. Husky rider Marty "Typhoon" Tripes powered into the top half dozen and in short succession passed Griewe, Yamaha rider Zoli Berenyi, and Snorteland.
