Poblano shIne at
CMC Carlsbad
By Rod Eschenburg
CARLSBAD, CA, FEB. 8
Kawasaki-mounted Cun McCuistion went two for two in the
combined Pro class at Carlsbad
Raceway
Sunday
over
vIsiting
Canadian rider Zoli Be.renyi (Yam) in
easy style, with Berenyi pressing in the
early laps only to fall back in the late
laps. McCuistion's win was his third
straight in successive weeks beginning
at Saddleback and progressing onto
the Sunday show at Anaheim. In the
250cc Intermediates, Honda rider
Vince Poblano staged a tremendous
comeback charge in the second moto
after a spill to squeak out a second and
the oYfiall over Mike Wilkinson (Yam)
and Chuck Hogan (Mai).
Yamaha support rider Ronnie
Lechien swept the 125cc Intermediates
in a ride out over Richard Hoffman
(Yam). Looks ,like another Barona
Oaks graduate is on his way to the top.
The Junior classes produced some
real fine racing with Honda mounted
Luis Martinez continuing his winning
ways in the 250cc class with another
two for two blast as Darryl Richardson
(Hon) took a tie- breaker second over
Yamaha rider Steve Gabrielson. In the
l25cc Juniors. Tom Curran scored his
first Carlsbad victory with a two for
two first place effort after·a close
battle with Chris Apodaca. With rain
beginning in the second round of
motos Sunday, a unique situation
occurred as the track started out dry·
slick and ended up wet·slick instead of
the normal reverse order!

by the third lap had Zitterkopf in his
sights. Again die defensive battle was
on but this time Zitterkopf found the
hole he was looking for and took over
the lead on the white flag lap and
started pulling away. MacCracken
didn't give up easy but had to settle for
second which was still good enough for
the overall. Zitterkopf was second with
Miller third.
The Open Pros saw WFO's Jerry
Black, out on top with Gary Jones,
"Mr. Experienced," in second and
Tony Sullivan, the other half of the
WFO team, in third. Jones started
picking away immediately until the
time was right and then took over the
lead and showed the troops home.
In the second moto it was again
Black with the better start with Jones
again in second and Sullivan third.
Jones again set things up until the
second lap and as they headed for the
uphill Jones set up the pass and
executed it perfectly to go ahead to
take the lead and the win. Black
claimed second and Sullivan lost his
third to Bill Pelto but still had enough
for the overall show spor.
The Intermediates took it right to
the end with the only perfect score
coming in the 250cc Intermediates as
Riverside Kawasaki's John Mazzacane
did some early passing and went on to
win both motos. Ken Donovan (Cross
Country Cycle~ was second and Scott
Denny third.
Open Intermediates Dean Wilkinson
(K T Racing) and Gary Sherohman
(Long Beach Yam) ended the evening
tied with one win and one second
apiece but Sherohman came out on
top with his first in the second moto.
Mike Senter was third.
Tom Hodgin paced the powerful
Redlands High S-chool team as he
contributed wins in the 250cc and
Open Senior divisions with Frank
Orosco adding his win in the 100cc
Senior and a second in the Mini
Senior. Teammate Mike Flanders
picked up seconds in both. Mike
Edson, hoping to add to the awesome
showing of Redlands, started the
evening off with first moto wins in
both the 125 and 250cc Senior
divisions but was unable to run the
second motos, slowing down Redlands
a little bit but never seriously putting
their domination in jeopardy.

The disbelievers from last week
took no chances of missing another Friday's night action and
were olit in force at Corona Raceway with over 200 riders on hand.

The Pros had Some interesting
battles with no wins coming easy. In
the first moto it was Eric MacCracken
riding for Malcolm Smith with a wire
to wire romp over the 250cc field.
Marty Miller ran second with Advanced
Cycle rider Greg Zitterkopf a close
third. The racing was close but no one
was able to find any holes in the others'
defenses and only a couple of pretty
closes.
The second moto was a different
story. MacCracken again got the edge
at the start with Zinerkopf second and
Mike Edson third. Miller, at this point
was fourth but it didn't take him ,long
to find the chink in Edson's armor and

Old Timers go at It
for two days In
Winter National
By Bob Alloy
ORANGE, CA,JAN.
~1-FEB.
1
Saturday was the stan of the Old
Timers MX Association two day
Winter National at Saddleback.
This was our second National
and we had Old Timers from Sierra,
Washington, and Nevada. Why
couldn't we greet these great guys with
some of our fabulous winter sunshine
instead of the muddy track we had?
Although the track was as wel1-prepared
as humanly possible, the mud won.
In addition to the Old Timers from
Washington, Sierra, and Nevada we
also had riders from the Over The Hill
Gang and there was a support class.
Final scoring included both racing days
and was done on Sunday.
Masters division started with Marv
Olson taking the lead with II other
riders in hot pursuit. This didn't
bother Marv that much as he just concentrated on winning and that is just
what he did. Jim Saitone of the Sierra
chapter got into second place in the
third lap and didn't let go. Third and
fourth places were also won by locals,
Larry Shoemaker taking third and Jim
Beltinck blasting into fourth.
The second moto began with
Saitone in there with the holeshot and
whizzing around for the next four laps.
At this point Olsen, who had worked
up from mid pack position, took the
lead away from Saitone and continued
on his way to another victory. Beltinck
really did a lot of fast moving for
second place. Shoemaker and Saitone
finished 3-4.
Dick Frampton began the action in
the Expert class by leading the pack
for four laps. On lap five, Larry
Bubak of the Sierra Old Timers took
the lead .and kept it for the win. Washington's Ken Hodeson didn't start off
too good but he really got in to passing
riders and came in with a second place
win. Los Angeles chapter members Ted
Holt took a dtird, Dick Frampton a
fourth and George Spearing the fifth.
Moto two started out with Fred
Sessions of Washington in the lead for
four laps. Tom Holt then took over for
. a lap before Sessions regained his lead.
Sie,rra's Larry Bubak took over the
lead on the ninth lap. The undaunted
Sessions came back once again, regained his lead in lap II and carried it
across the checkered flag. Ron Collins
from Washington took a well deserved
second place win. Blasting in with another third place win was Ted Holt.
Dick Mosley, our president, placed
fourth and Bob Crandal1 was fifth.
Bob Porter of the Sierra Old Timers
certainly had the Amateur wins al1
wrapped up. He completely dominated
the track and took both. first place
wins. Jim Cooke from Los Angeles
went out and took both second place
wins. Third in moto one was our own
Larry Smith and Dick Burgett of Oregon took fourth. Another Los Angeles
Old Timer, Hal Grady, wrapped up
fifth. Third place winner in moto two
was Burgett. Smith took fourth and
fol1owing Smith was Asker Lamkjaer.
Novice Dal Calais real1y had a great
day, putting his 125cc Yamaha into
the right gear, twisting that throtde
and blowing away just about everyone
to win both motos. Connie Holt had a
great lead for seven laps in the fint
moto but Calais just had to win, .so
it was Holt with second. Don Mont·
gomery, a Sierra Old Timer, was in
there with third, Chuck Bailey took
fourth and Bob Alloy was there for
fifth.
In moto two, second place win belonged to Montgomery with Alloy
there for third. Following Alloy were
- Holt and Bailey.
Sunday's races began with a muchdrier track and was a vast improvement
over Saturday. The Masters class
began the action and .lim Be1tinck
certainly had his day as he rode away
with both first place wins. Larry Shoemaker didn't look too good until lap
three at which time he looked very
good in second place. Washington riders Bob White and Jim Saltone placed
~-4. White took second place in the
second moto, Shoemaker ended II,p
third and Saitone placed fourth.
Expert Larry Bubab was real1y cooking. He took the first moto lead from
Fred Sessions on lap 13 and from then
on it was his game and he took the
second moto as well. Ted Holt had the
right kind of power as he too blasted
away and took two second place wi.ns.
Sessions took consecutive third places.
Dick Mosley took fourth in mota one,
followed by Bob Crandall. Taking
fourth in moto two was George Spearing and fifth went to Dick Frampton.
In the Amateur class Jim Cooke
started out widt the lead but on lap
two Bob Porter took command and
held it for two laps. Cooke then regained his lead but Porter took over
once again and carried his lead to the
finish. Cooke came in with a good
second place and Dick Burgett took
third. Larry Smith was in there for a
fourth and Asker Lamkjaer crossed the
checkered in fifth. In moto two, Cooke
got the holeshot and led things for four
laps. Burgett passed Cooke and took
that first place win. Cooke took
second, Lamkjaer came in tlrird, Porter
had fourth place and Hal Grady took
fifth. .
In the Novice division, Dal Calais
had an. early lead before Connie Holt
moved in and took over for the win.
Calais took a close second. Sierra Old
Timer Glen Finnerin had his Suzuki
over the winning line in third place.
Following Glen was another Sierra
member, Don Montgomery. Bob Alloy
was in there with a ftfth. Moto two
started with Leonard Bever in the lead
but on lap two Calais passed him and
continued on to take the win. Chuck
Bailey was in with second place.
Fennerin took third and Bever followed
Fennerin in with fourth. Don Montgomery was fifth.
