- recreationists. But, beyond simple advocacy. each of these people possesses unique qualities and inter· personal skills, which allow them to understand other's concerns and needs. Each has taken strong positions; each seeks to design and implement land use policies which provide for needed resource protection. and development. and yet are fair to all groups. Each has worked to accomplish the goals of his organization; yet each believes that user conflicts will be settled only through continued discussions and compromise. CORVA believes that the people would be well served by the inclusion of any, or all, of these individuals on the Desert District Multiple Use Advisory Council. Support Trade Tech The Los Angeles Trade Technical College system has contributed much to the motorcyde industry. Mter helping their motorcycle education program get started more than 10 years ago. I was truly gratified on January 18 to see Pat Owens give recognition and credit to the various contributors and graduates of the program who have established themselves in the industry. The occasion was their annual banquet. I personally am very proud of the 10 employees we have who attended L.A. Trade Tech. but even more important is the establishment of an efficient teaching system which really offers a good way to go for would be mechanics and other motorcycle technical aspirants. For various political reasons. the motorcyde program at L.A. Trade Tech is in some difficulty and a valuable program such as this certainly needs our recognition and support. Vocational education is under fire and Instructors Pat Owens and others want to do more than they are being allowed to do. We think that the readers of Cycle News should know about the opportunities and problems of the program which costs the industry nothing and offers it a whole lot. H you are interested in the program for yourself or wish to help Pat, why not give him a call at 213/746-0800, extension 212. LEO LAKE Manager. Safety & Compliance Department. Engineering Services Division Yamaha Motor Corp. Cypress, CA Let's hear it for Bad Brad I am sending this letter in regards to Bad Brad Lackey's performance in the last few years of international competition. Personally, I don't think Brad is given enough credit in the magazines; papers and television broadcasts that cover the sport of motocross. I guess I could ask, "Is this a case of out of sight out of mind? Or just another one of America's unsung heros?" Sure. he hasn't won a World Championship. but he's tried damn hard and hasn't given up to come home and win big money. As an avid rider and motocross fan. I'm asking all you loyal MXers to let the people who publish magazines and papers and broadcast TV coverage of motocross know that we want more of Lackeyl In dosing I wish good luck to Brad and Suzuki - may you devastate Europe this yearl MONTEJ. HAMMON Great Falls, MT Bicycling AMA supporter I read an artide in your Jan. 14 issue of Cycle News entitled "AMA sues BLM, hearing Jan. 12." I support the AMA in wanting to keep the desert open to riders. I am not a rider myself, but I do a little cross-country riding on a 10speed during the summer. This just goes to show you. some bicydists do care about motocr05sers. In dosing. I would like to wish the AMA the best Of luck on their case. CHRIS MONFORT Sunnyvale, CA The AMA s lawsuit against the BLM's California Desert Plan has been continued until Feb. 12 so that the AMA and other co-Plaintiffs could study the BLM documents more thoroughly ... Editor. BLM Advisory Council nominations CORVA would like to nominate the following individuals for consideration for a position on the Desert District Multiple Use Advisory Council: Marie Brashear - National Outdoor Coalition Dick MacPherson - California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs Richard Gochnaur - CORVA Chuck Hollingsworth - CORVA DonettaAdams - CORVA Louis McKey - Phantom Duck of the Desert. Inc. CO RVA believes that each of these individuals would be a worthy representative of the concerns of the general public and the needs of outdoor A rousing "hip, hip, hooray" and a gratefrul thank you to the Hungry Seven for all their efforts. The Hungry Valley State Vehicle Recreation Area general plan draft looks OK despite the ever-changing maps the Department of Parks and Recreation put up at each meeting. Thanks also to Hank Ortmann and Gary Shannon of DPR who had to bear the brunt of sometimes loud meetings. But let's not rest - the "other side" is surely gonna try to change it for one reason or another. You can bet your knobbies on that. Remember. it's only a draft. THE PHANTOM MOOSE Hungry Seven is the affectionate nick· name given to the seven-member Hungry Valley S VRA Citizens advisory Committee.. .Editor. Disappointment It really burns me up that you guys didn't write anything about the 60cc class racers in your Anaheim Amateur SuperCToss article. I raced a 60cc in that race. I looked forward to that race for two months. I got new gloves, a new tire. and a new swingarm just for that race. My mom and dad took me out to different tracks to practice for that race. and here you guys. don't write a thing about us 60s, except in the results. Thanks a loti JEFF DAVID Huntington Beach. CA Sorry, Jef! Having raced ourselves, we're aware of aU the time, energy and bucks that go into an effort like yours. And we've also fell the disappointment of not having our efforts recognized in Cycle News. One note of consolation: The coverage we give the Pros is a reward for even more time, energy and bucks that they've invested. When you reach that stage, it 'U all seem worthwhile. In the meantime, congratulations on your third placing in the 60cc Novice race... Editor. Next vveek: Seattle Supercross!
