DG Golden State Series: Round six Glover clinches 250cc title at Sacralllento By Terry Whytal SACRAMENTO, CA, FEB. 8 "I waited too long to start my charge," noted Broc Glover between motos of the 250cc Pro class, "then I fell and bent the front brake lever into the throttle and couldn't use the brake." Glover managed to rally in the second moto and clinch the Continental Moto-spons Club's DG Golden State Series 250cc 18 title on a demanding ,Prairie City track. Yamaha rider Arlo Englund topped the SOOcc pro clash ahead of "Rocket Rex" Staten, whose second overall moved him back into contention with points leader Eric McKenna. The 12Scc Pro race fell to the Danny "Map" Chandle dazzle and dance routine as he piloted a new Suzuki Floater to a 4-1 score and the overall win ove, such rivals as Team Honda's Johnny O'Mara and Jim Gibson. and Suzuki's Ron Turner. The Veterans Junior class featured several lead changes and two different moto winners. When the final checkered flag fell Suzuki rider Duffy Mitchell had the overall win in the bag with a 2·1 score. Mark Mcintosh picked up the second overall honors on a big bore KTM and Greg Gustafson finished third for the day riding a Maico. 2&Occ Pro Staten rocketed into the early lead of moto one with Yamaha teamster Donnie Cantaloupi quickly moving into second place ahead of Suzuki rider Clint Hardick. Rounding out the top five as the field completed lap one were Glover and teamm'te Rick Johnson with Larry WOIick and Gary Semics pushing their Yb into battle from sixth andseventh positions. Glover and Johnson pushed past Hardick on the second circuit. Johnson found a couple of extra ponies lurking inside his motor and put the moves on both Glover and Cantaloupi on the . uphill straight, edged past Staten on the sweeper and then dropped back to third by overcooking the downhill dogleg. Cantaloupi and Johnson locked bars two turns later and Camaloupi took a trip to the turf. At the crossed flags, Staten led by three seconds over Johnson, Glover, Wosick, Hardick and Semics. Cantaloupi remounted and, charging, worked past Honda rider Jim Tarantino, Setnics and Hardick. Wosick and Cantaloupi traded paint as the moto neared the last lap and Cantaloupi moved into third as Glover faded after a small tumble left him with no from bralte. Staten was first to the checkers, Johnson picked up second with Cantaloupi thIrd, Semics founh and Glover fifth. KTM rider Joey Schlag brought the crowd to its feet as he shared the second moto holeshot with Staten. Schlag held off repeated charges by Staten as Cantaloupi, Hardick and Glover argued over the next three slots. Glover settled' the argument on lap three and moved up to pressure Staten. Glover duked his way past Staten and Set sights on Schlag. With the spectators cheering him on, Schlag fought to hold off Glover but the Broccoli Kid's National MX experience paid off as Glover chose a faster line through one of Prairie City's rut·filled straights and moved into the front position. Schlag bailed off trying to keep in striking distance of Glover and finished far downfield as Cantaloupi earned the overall win by finishing second behind Glover. Staten went home with the runner-up share of the purse while Glover picked up the third place money. Grossi passed the hapless Staten the back pan of the course wi McKenna quickly closing in a passing Staten through the drop' guUy only to be repassed by a W Staten. With one lap remai~ McKenna made the pass stick and t top positions were set.
