his own r~ar wh~1.
Whil~ on th~ California loop, Ga~tz
report~d that th~ir motor ~ized. "W~
w~r~ ~ight minutn down," h~ said. In

Running
"only"
th~
IIO-mile
California loop, Trac~ Dickson and
~an Sundahl ddeated Rob~rt "Ac~"
Williams and Mark W~ixeldorfer by
18 s«onds. Down by six minutes at
Check 2. the Dickson/Sundahl team
turned it on to open up six minutes by
Check 3, but almost lost all of that
lead when Williams/Weixeldorfer dOlled
the gap at the finish.
The fact tbat the race even started
was a credit to much hard work and
cooperation by SCORE, the BLM and
a numb~r of other a~ncin. Though
SCORE had late last year s«ured permission and the necnsary permits to
run the race, ~~ral mvironmental
groups including the Si~rra Club and
Audubon Soci~ty went to court in an
~ort to halt the running of this year's
race. With tbe h~lp of the BLM and
local and county a~ncin. SCORE defeated the suit in what SCORE Presidmt
Sal Fish termed a "precedent.~tting"
decision.
The number of actual starters was
599, 514 of which w~re four-wh~l vehicles, 85 motorcycles and two ATCs. •
