took third and a transfer. Butch
Brown, Peter Hook and Gary Scott
followed him across the line.
The
final
heat
saw
Steve
Mendenhall get his Yamaha out of the
hole faster than Honda pilots Freddie
Spe~er or Mickey Fay. But showing
no SIgnS of the previous night's crash,
Fay qwckly took the point position
and showed the way to Mendenhall
and Spencer at the end of the first lap.
Spencer passed Mendenhall on the
second lap and made it stick, but when
Buddy Robinson tried the same trick a
lap later it didn't stick at all and
Mendenhall was back in third a turn
later. Bubba Shobert got past
Robinson within two laps and moved
up to pressure, but not pass,
Mendenhall.
Fay led as they took the white flag,
but Spencer had been closing on him
smce the halfway point. 'As they
entered the third turn, a tight lefthander entering the infield, Fast
Freddie approached the turn far
outside of Fay. He squared it off early
an~ sharply, ge.lling the drive on Fay
gomg up the Jump and taking the
lead. Spencer held on to take the win
with Fay and Mendenhall taking the
other two transfers. Shobert's machine
died in the infield on the last lap and
Robmgson took fourth over Billy
Labrie.
Semis
After
Scott
Pearson,
Steve
Morehead and John Burnell were sent
to the penalty line, the first semi got
underway. Bruce Hanlon's Brian
O'Hagan-sponsored Yamaha led the
fi~t lap and every succeeding lap to
wm the sole National ticket. Brad
Hurst followed Frank Word for two
laps before taking possession of second
or the remainder of the race. Jeff
Haney got bogged in traffic early and
had to claw his way up to third.
The second semi also featured one
rider domination_ Buddy "Budman"
Robinson put his 750 Harley-Davidson
into overdrive and smoked off with
laps 1-10. The second place contest
was contested largely by Pacific Northwest riders as Brett Barkman, Don
Brown and John Wincewicz rode in
close formation. Two laps from the
finish Brown went by Barkman to
t~ke second with Wincewicz fourth.
..Junior Invitational
California's Bill Scott showed up
ready to make up for the crash that
had taken him out of the previous
night's Junior race. Scott qualified
third fastest, then put his Yamaha out
Iront as the flags changed from green
to crossed to white to checkered.
SCOll'S only hint of trouble was a
bobble on one lap as he came down off
the big jump hard on the front wheel.
While receiving a Budweiser trophy,
• S~Oll thanked sponsors S&S Racing,
Simpson, Castrol, ND Spark Plugs and
bike builder Dave Byrd.
Brian Haycock (Hon) rode the last
nine laps in second as Kreg Hunt
(Yam) worked his way up to third in
rhe late going. Mark Rooks took
fourth with Randy Pallerson fifth.
Trophy Race
Brad Hurst and SCott Pearson took
the first two positions of the Trophy
Race immediately and permanently.
Pearson was right on Hurst in the
opening laps and passed him for the
lead briefly on lap four as they went
around the oval. A mistake in a corner
tWo laps later gave Hurst some
rc:athing r!>?m and he took advantage
r of It by opemng up, and holding a good
lead to the fmish. Pearson took second
followed by Don Brown, Sal Hoffman
and Mike Sullivan.
Brell Barkman and Jeff Haney went
down in an opening lap scuffle.
Barkman got up quickly and went on
