TEN YEARS AGO J .Il. Kelley of KK Motorcycle Supply was elected president of the American Motorcycle Association, being voted in by Class B (industry) members. Bob Hansen (Kawasaki) was elected vice president, Dan BUrDI (Buco helmets) treasurer, Jess ThOllW (Cycle Maga· ine) assistant treasurer, and John Harley (Harley·Davidson) was named secretary. A new slate of Executive Com· mittee members was also named, in· c1uding Ilon Ilobbins (Honda), Iloxy Ilockwood (BSA), Terry Tieman (Yamaha), Ken Clark (Yankee Motors) and Paul Garnant (Suzuki), in addi· tion to the elected officers. Beating a pack of Open class Triumphs, BSAs and Huskys, Wet Evans took Top Eliminator trophy and money home from a hillclimb on Saddleback Park's Matterhorn - doing the deed on a 250cc Bultaco. 6:00 P.M. • 11:00 P.M. In the main event however, Mike Yam jumped out front and led for 12 laps before Roberts took over the lead. Kenyon finished third. Indoor short track action was also on tap in Monroe, WA. Bellingham's Steve Baker won the 125cc Expert A main, then finished second to Randy Skiver in the 250cc Expert A main. A Daytona warm·up road race at Wil· low Springs found John McGillivray won the 250cc GP event, while Howard Lynggard took 350cc GP, Marty Lunde grabbed 500cc GP and George Kerker won Open GP. Steve McLaughlin topped Open Production on a Honda Four. The onslaught of Puch factory riders from Europe on the southern Califor· nia motocross scene continued as Harry Everts and Christian Gouverneur finished 1-2 in the 125cc Expert class at CMC Carlsbad. Billy Clements won the 250cc Expert class and Pat deBenetti was the 500cc Expert victor. Added to the $39,000 in prize money already posted for Daytona Speed Week '71 was $5300 in lap money for the Daytona 200. New AMA President J. R. Kelley rustled up $100 sponsor· ships for each of the 53 laps. Larry Pfutzenreuter (Bul) was the overall winner of the Checkpoints M.C. hare 'n' hound, besting Whitey Martino and Tom Muto. Terry Clark finished fourth overall on a 100cc Harley-Davidson Baja. It was announced that Eve1 Knievel would attempt a record breaking jump of 19 cars at Ontario Motor Speedway. KnieveJ's previous record was 18. The 21st annual Hi Mountain Enduro was hosted by the Cal Poly Penguins in the hills near San Luis Obispo, CA. Though no results were available at presstime, Dave Ekins appeared to be the overall winner. I \".
