•......I.1l11on MolllltMl- .... whoo~rs -.MII..... and cross grain washouts that had to be traversed at 24 mph. As there were several ATC classes riding the first loop only, [wo-loo~rs were wisely allowed to be late at the field checks with no ~nalty. This came in handy as some checks were swam~d with up to 15 bikes and trikes getting scored at one time. The two-loo~rs graciously made sure their one loop friends got their cars marked before them. CRC number one 200cc rider Craig Lair (C-A) got out of sha~ in the deep sand and unloaded, breaking his collarbone. Lair hopes to be healthy before the Feb. 22 National Enduro at Red Mountain. Craig would like to thank all the people who hel~d to get him and his bike in off the course. After getting their cards marked, riders were allowed to start the second loop on their own. The smart ones left a couple of minutes early because the trail led directly into the sand hills. Some of the more difficult hills were littered with buried bikes and pushing riders. With a check 3.2 miles and eight minutes from the start, everybody had to jam to make it in on time. The loop then spilled out onto the desert with 6 mph section to let riders catch up. Since checks are possible at that s~ average in D-38, it was comical to watch riders going from bush to bush looking for a nonexistent check. The next speed average was 36 mph, creating a short hare and hound up a Baja ty~ sandwash. After changing to 30 mph and climbing a difficult hill .followed by an equally difficult downhill, riders were treated to the only tie-breaker check on the course. A scheduled five minute break with gas available allowed mast to, catch up before it was off and running again on the 50-mile plus loop. The next check was on the top of a V-cut at literally the end of a narrow wash with 10·foot vertical sides. If a rider ha p~ned to be blocking rhe cut all anyone could do was wait for him to move out of the way. The checkpoint was followed by the second and last five-minute break for late riders. The course led back towards the sand hills with one more check behind a gigantic dune. Even though it was 24 mph riders had to contend with more limited traction sand hills with many getting temporarily lost due to downed markers. Bush Eaters M.C. assume that unthoughtful ATC riders were to blame for the missing ribbon. Very few made the finish on time. The only complaint that the Bush Eaters had were the number of people who failed to heed the advice in the riding instructions ~rtaining to gas. Less than one half of the two loo~rs sent fuel out to the gas-available five minute break. The sweep crew s~nt a lot of time in the rain bringing in the stranded racers. Other family enduro promoters could well learn from the Bush Eaters about speed averages and checkpoint ~nonnel because both were excellent.. D-37 riders who would like to race a good event without killing their bikes and themselves should give D-38 a try. The next D-38 enduro is the Bush Bunny, March 22. It will be a combination easy poker run and fun. enduro. D-38 is in the process of finalizing an enduro for Memorial Day weekend down in Tecate, Mexico, site of the infamous Tecate 500. Tentative plans have a bulll'ight and other events to go along with the enduro. If you're interested in going, give D-38 steward Bruce Sanford a call at 714/275-1823 or 277 -2743 for more info. • •.
