AGO Dick Mann (BSA) opened up the 1971 AMA Grand National Championship Series by winning the Houston Astrodome 'IT_ Mann had trailed Jimmy Odom's Triumpb for 19 of the 20 laps in the event, but with less than a lap to go, broken spokes in Odom's rear wheel pulled out the hub and threw the chain. Skip Van Leeuwen picked up the second place finish in front of Dave Aldana. Gary Scott won the Junior main event, besting Loyal Penn and Roger King. The following night saw over 35,000 fans taking in the short track national. After many laps of being two or three feet apart, Jimmy Odom took the win two feet in front of Mark BreDford. Charlie Chapple and Keith Mashburn placed 3-4. Kenny Roberts topped Mike Kidd and Gary Scott in the Junior race. In the Yamaha Silver Cup indoor short track held in New York's Madison Square Garden the week before, AI Kenyon won the main event in front of Jimmy Odom and Keith Mashburn.
