I I' , With points at stak~, all of th~ new num~r ones w~~ ther~. Mark Cain, th~ h~avyw ~ight num~r on~, Cunis Cannon , th~ 80 and 125cc numb~r o~, and Randy Bird, th~ 250cc numb~r on~, w~~ m~t by th~ rest of th~ troops h~ad·on and full forc~. Oh yeah, Larry Bird, th~ heavyweight su~r ~nior rid~r, with his numb~r o~ that h~'s work~ so long for, was the~, too. Th~ track was so fast and th~ riding was so hot that only one of th~ District num~r ones got an ~rall win in his class. Mark Cain did it to t~m in the combined 500cc Amateur/Ex~ ratt. Th~ tTack was grad~ to perfect ion and bank~d in th~ tums. Thorou ghly wat~~ th~ night befo~, it CU5hion~ out and ~ld that way fOT the ~nti~ rac~ program of t~ motos fOT ~ach class. Guys w~~ going fi~ wide in th~ com~rs, roostin g ~ach oth~r lik~ it was a Lousivill~ limeston~ half mil~ tTack. Wayne Rainey was dialing his ~an green Viper Racing·fram~ Kawasaki 250 up for Housto n, and was definitely dazzling ~ryon~ with his lett~r ~rfect rolls on t~ start~r, and his mid-co mer feet on the ~ drives into th~ straight aways. What made his act so c1assy, though, was that his competition was t~ District's numbe r on~ 250« rider and th~ num~r on~ 125cc rid~r on a 250 in th~ sam~ rac~ with him. They rod~ ~at, but th~ cl~ar diff~~ ntt ~tw~n a razor-~~ Pro and an aspirin g sporlSman was only too evident. It mad~ t~ fans ~aliz~ what is invol~ in t~ trip to th~ front of t~ Pro lineup. Brian Barrack hamm~r~ Kevin Ambl'Olle and Jason Bell into submission for th~ 80cc combin~ class. By th~ last ratt they had found a stylish lin~ out in th~ marble s at th~ ~~ of th~ track and were as ~rRTko as tM big doubt about his ability, or his bikes ~ing right for th~ task. Now that it's ~rfect, h~ needs a 250. Curtis Cannon was dicing it out with Br~nt Bow~rs mor~ than onc~, but pr~ail ~ (intimi · da~) ov~r his com~tition. Th~ 250cc Novices ~~ left wallowing in Ron B~Il's wak~. No contest. John P~~z put th~ Amateu rs away but th~ best, most int~nsely fought racing of th~ day was among Skip Christy, Gug N~"on and James Morris. They were on the gas, swapping roost, trading positions inches apart, and probab ly w~nt hom~ with Pir~lli rub~r on t~ir pants l~. Phew! Mark Cain and Bobby Sand~rs took th~ 500cc Ex~rlS for a rid~. They cross·b lock~, cut down on ~ach oth~r, shut th~ gat~ and huff~ and puff~ it for lap aft~r lap, but Mark put his numb~r on~ plat~ in front. Keith Gu~ finis~ second, though, by b~ing wh~~ Sand~rs should hav~ been too many times. All three w~re thum~r.mount~. Bill Bart~1s left a bunch of twins in his roost in th~ O~n class. But, that's only on th~ shon track. District will hav~ a half mil~ som~a y this ynr. Next District ratt will ~ IT at Sadd1~ back on F~b. 22. B~ awar~, Jack, that dirt track is back. S'lonll. o.3 7M X By Ron Laws on SUNNYMEAD, CA,JA N. 18 Malcohn Smith's Eric MacCracken was unstop pable in both the 250cc and Open Pro classes at the AMA District 37 DeAnza motocross last week. Th~ only com~tition h~ had was in th~ O~n class from Barnes Yamah a rid~r Rodney Brand who l~' most of th~ first moto. T~ holeshot w~nt to Eddi~ Mich~tti (C· A), but on th~ first sta~ and gav~ it away to Greg Zitt~rkopf (Yam). MacCrack~n had stan~ ~hind th~ ~nti~ pack and had pl~nty of work ahead of him wbil~ Brand was in second plac~ pushing lap M Zit~rkopf. On the third lap, Zitterkopf drop~ out of th~ rac~ l~aving Brand with a strong l~ad o~r Doug R~nno (Yam), Jim Hoov~r (Yam) and Motocross Gator rid~r Ronni~ Gibson (Mai). MacCrack~n was worJr.ing his way through t~ pack fast and bef~ t~ halfway point he was in a distant second plac~. Althou gh MacCrack~n reel~ Brand in slightly in t~ following laps, h~ was still far from striking distant t with only three laps to go. T~n Brand stall~ his Yamah a. That was all MacCrack~n n~~ to catch and pass th~. l~ad~r and th~n tak~ th~ ' was ~ady for th~ next moto, but Brand didn't mak~ it. Just befo~ t~ stan of th~ rac~ his CDI unit shon~ out, ending his hopes for the day. TM mota was all MacCrackm's. R~nno was second all the way with Hoov~r third. T~ only battl~ was for fourth ~tween Mic~tti and Gibson. Gibson secur~ th~ position lat~ in th~ rac~ ~tting the ov~rall mullS at Mac Crack~n, R~nno, Hoov~r and Gibson . MacCracJr.~n also mad~ shon work out of th~ 250cc class. Scott Hodgson -(Yam) pull~d t~ holeshot and l~ t~ first three laps of moto on~ befor~ giving in to MacCrack~n. Aft~r that, th~ att.Fm t . MacCrack~n Yamaha-mount~. Results MacCracken on top at DeAnza win. Northr up domina tion of Corona last week and cam~ v~ry cl~. In t~ ~nd, how~v~r , they wound up crashin g into ~ach oth~r whiJ~ Northr up wh~e1i ~ away to y~t anoth~r win. Th~ racing ord~r for th~ first half of moto on~ was Nonhr up narrowly ov~r Combs and MacCrack~n. Th~n MacCra ck~n start~ moving, first passing Combs and th~n putting th~ prnsu ~ on Northr up. As th~ rac~ cam~ into ilS final laps MacCrack~n mad~ his mov~ and ~ld it aU the way hom~ o~r Nonhr up and Combs . Dough Heil was founh ov~r K~ith Williamson and Mik~ Edson, all Edson (Yam) took it away from Hodgson, th~n Fr~ Combs start~ a driv~ up. H~ displac~d Hodgso n anoth~r position on lap nin~, and th~n mad~ th~ mov~ on Edson four laps lat~r. At th~ finish it was t~ Big Mac out front with Combs second ov~r Edson, Hodgson and Dennis V~tt~r (Yam). In round two MacCracJr.~n p~ Hodgso n in th~ first tum and that was that as far as th~ l~ad was conc~m~d. Combs soon mo~ into second whil~ Edson and V~tt~r dic~ for third. At t~ fmish li~ it was Vett~r, but in the ov~ral1 standin gs third plac~ money still w~nt to Edson. Mini Intermediat~ Jason Prat~r (Yam) had a tough rac~ on his hands, not with another Intermedia~, but with Ex~Tt Chris Lanc~. They stan~ on th~ sam~ lin~ and Prat~T l~ a few laps, th~n was passed on th~ downhill by Lanc~. Prat~r was trying to mak~ a r~pass in th~ follow ing tum, but Lanc~ missed a shift and t~ two rid~rs down but w~nt Prat~r collid~. nt~ in tim~ to win th~ Inter· r~mou m~ia~ class. In th~ n~xt round they w~~ at it again, this tim~ with Lanc~ l~ading narrow ly al1 th~ way. Second plac~ in th~ Int~rmedia t~ class w~nt to John Gersjes (Kaw) O~T John Ray. Lanc~ was t~ only ~ntry in th~ Ex~rt class. Mik~ Ro~r Thomp son, our Nation al Amat~u r Champ in t~ 125cc short track, whup~ '~m good and I~ft no PEE WEE: 1. Bobby lllMo
