Turner took a trip to the turf at the start but quickly began picking off riders. Suzuki rider Jon Nelson had taken the early lead in the race only to have Chandler. Suzuki R&D rider George Holland and Yamaha's Scon Burnworth power by in the opening laps. Burnworth displaced Holland for the number two slot as Chandler clicked off 2:46 lap times and pulled away from the field. As lhe race neared lhe final laps, Turner amazed all by working into fourth place and pressuring Holland. Holland soon fell victim to the more experienced rider's choice of lines. and Turner had one lap to reel in Burnwonh for second. Turner's charge fell just short at the nag as Burnwonh held on to the rurmer-up position. Hoi· land finished fourth with A.J. Whiting sliding his Yamaha in for fifth.
