The Continental Moto-spons Club heralded the new year with close to 600 of the top Sportsmen racers throughout the Western United States, converging on Saddleback Park for the opening race of the DG Golden State Series. For the spansmen, it is the most prestigious series of the year, offering to its victors among other prizes, four Pro-Trac Trailers. Dede Cates broke a Golden State Series record, being the first woman ever to win either moto in an Intermediate race. And break it she did, with a spectacular ride in the 125cc Intermediate division one contest. Pulling the holeshot in the first moto, Cates proceeded to open up a five bikelength lead early in the first lap. She found heavy anillery from the rear, led by Mark Nelson and Randy Skinner. Building. to a seven bikelength lead, Cates escaped much of the madness ensuing all over the track. Suddenly, Cates' hand was in the air - she was off to the side of the track, out of the running with a thrown chain. Nelson took cha~ and secured the mota win for himself as riders continued to collide and pile up left and right. Cates, back on the track, rode out the rest of the mota and watched Skinner take down second, Taylor Marcell firm up third and Vince McMahon battle to hold fourth down to the wire. 14 When the machines roared to life for the second time, Cates was ready. As she's done so many times before, Cates took command and led the charge up the hill, followed by Donny Myron, and McMahon, running second and third respectively. McMahon took over second and made a continuous bid for the lead. Just inches away, he tried an outside line but couldn't get by. With a half a lap remaining, McMahon was alongside Cates, handlebar tp 1\31ICUe. bar, only to find the door slammed shut in the final turn. Running a strong third was Nelson who ended the day with top honors. McMahon finished in the number two spot and Marcell came home to third overall. The second division of 250ccJuniors were a rowdy lot who knew no fear. Surviving both motos and emerging with a beautiful pair of wins was Butch Peick (Kaw). Heavy competition was the rule from the stan of the first moto as David Dulin set his Maico up with a duel for the lead against Swukimounted Bill Haynsworth. After much wheel scraping, Haynsworth pulled away. Throughout the pack racers were taking each other on, two and three abreast, over the jumps, deep into the berms. Kawasaki rider Ralph Peralta set a record of his own by bailing three times in a row at the bottom of one of the hills. Peick edged his Kawasaki through and into the lead, followed by Phillip Siebierke and Haynswonh, firm in third. When the moto drew to a close, the top three positions remained unchallenged. The second moto brought more of the same. Siebierke escaped early and set up a lead, followed by Peick in second and Mark Tesone in third. From third on back the action was heavy with riden richocheting off each other .and into anything in their path. Jeff Scott broke loose and took over third. pushing Peick to the limit. As the moto drew to a close, Peick took control, with Siebierke holding second and Haynswonh back in third. Peick wheeled down victory row for top honon, Siebierk.e took second overall with ""a sweet 2-2 ride and third overall went to Haynswonh. One of the winningest riders of the day was Scott Brown. Brown staned off the day in the 60cc Intermediate class, putting his Suzuki through its paces as he fought to hold off Tim Pritchard throughout the fint moto and rode on the raw edge throughout to try and catch Eddie Hicks in the lead. The second time out, Mouse McCoy took control and left the competition ~~ ~ .(;otil. "'-- ~XQlAA holding off Shane Trittler, Doug FISher, and Brown running fifth. By the end of the race, Neal emerged the victor, McCoy took down second overall and Brown emerged with third overall. Brown returned to the line for the 9II 80cc Stock Intermediate contest, undaunted and ready for victory. Aboard a Swuki he set out for a grand slam win, taking on his old adversary, Mouse McCoy and holding him to second throughout both motos. Hicks finished the fmr moto with a third and ended the day with a founh overall and John McLellan racked up third overall with a 5-!! ride. The day long duel between Brown, "The Mouse" McCoy and Eddie Hicks was far from over. When the 9-11 80cc Modified Intermediate race roared off the line it was ''The Mouse" who roared the loudest and longest and simply took charge. Hicks followed in second and fought off Brown throughout the first mota. When the machines came to life for the second time Brown. by sheer tenacity put "The Mouse" behind him and rode like the devil was after him. Hicks, firmly entrenched in third, managed to hold off John Ray, as he had the previous time around. When the checkered flag waved them home, McCoy ended up with the overall win, Brown proudly scooped up second overall and third went to Hicks. Results 60 JR: 1. Mike Peec8relle (yernl; 2. Gibson, Tarantino cashin at Saddleback Saturday By Terry Whytel ORANGE, CA, DEC. 27 SUNNYMEAD, CA,JAN. 4 It was the first race of the at DeAnza Cycle Park Rodney Brand started the right with an Open Pro the lead from Dave Douglas (Mai) on the last lap. Craig Adams (KTM) was third. In the second round Brand took the win easily. Eric MacCracken (Yam) ran a similar race in the 250cc Pro class. He went down and then fought his way back up to leader Keith Dysert (Kaw). they went back and forth before MacCracken took the lead for good. Phil Thomensen (Yam) took a third ~several seconds back, in front of Chris Tarvin (Hon). MacCracken wasn't about to let anything interfere with the second moto and so he took the lead ~arly and then pulled away. In the meantime, Dysen was having a hard time with Thontensen. Thontensen made a pass, but then couldn't hold it and Dysen got back by into second. In the end, it lined up just like the fim round. For a change. the sponsman classes were, on the average, larger than the Pro ranks. In the l25cc Intermediate class Lloyd Thomas (Yam) topped the competition with a double moto win. Wile he was running away with both motos, second place was up for grabs. Ti Swartz (Yam) held it for several laps of the first moto, then he gave way to Sam Ramirez (Yam) who held it all the way in. Finishing third was Yamaha mounted Jim Pearson. While Thomas was pulling away in the next moto once more, Donnie Sigrist (Suz) was in the number two spot. On the fourth lap Sigrist dropped out of the race, leaving the position up for grabs again. Swanz came through, passing Scott Amy (Yam) and earning second overall in the end. Amy netted a third with his 4-!! run. year and year win. Brand had to work for the victory, however, after a spill early in the first mota cost him nearly a half lap. Gibson regularly gives a riding lesson to the local Pros but this week he also showed the way for fellow National stars Rex Staten and LOP's Mark Lawrence. ,
