1980 Cycle Nevvs/West Rider of the Year
- - Louis McKey, a.k.a. The Phantom Duck of the
For the third consecutive year, that twowheeled feathered nemesis of California antiORVers, the infamous Phantom Duck of the
Desert, a mild-mannered electrician from
Fontana, Louis McKey was selected by our
readers to receive Cycle NewslWest Rider of
the Year laurels.
.
The election, based on ballots printed onetime in the paper and sent in by caring individuals, became a "no contest" landslide victory.
The Duck received more than four times the
votes cast for his closest runners-up!

Readers explained their votes: "He has done
more for riders than any other rider or racing
star." "Guts, m'an, guts!" "Need more people
like him." "Being a fast rider isn't enough ...
you must fight for your right to ride and Louis
McKey has been doing it for years."
Our favorite came from a lady in San
Francisco named Mildred McKey: "He is my
son - my Don Quixote - and he has per- .
severed in following his dream - keeping the
desert open for the People to enjoy. He has
class and guts."
Amen, Mom McKey, amen.
