HELMS Alaska to Argentina 1980 San Rafael, CA A time for giving and caring The officers and members of CORVA would like to publicly thank everyone who participated in our Help the Duck; Join CORVA program. So far, CORVA has presented the Phan· tom Duck witb $350 (applications are stin being received~.Your participation will enable the Phantom Duck and CORVA to continue to present a strong defense for all ORVers. As usual. much more is n«ded. At preent several lawsuits are pending against the "desert plan." they will require much money. The various groups pressing these lawsuits nred your help (money) and support (participation). Please help. The holidays are approaching. It is a special time for giving and caring and joy. Our thoughts naturally turn away from strife and conflicl. It is a time for famili~ and friends. not for balll~ with idiotic bureaucrats and power· mad preservationists. But I ask that you take a few minutes and con· sider what sort of future you want for your family. If you are sick and tired of the over·regulation and over· protection we suffer under. then I ask that after New Year's Day. you do do something about il. 198) promises LO be most exciting. It appears that the various ORV o"""n· izations have finally realized that appeasement and accommodation will not answer. that it is time to stand up and acl. New I....dersmp is arising. These people are dedicated to strengtb. ening the ORV organizations and pre· senting a strong defense of our rights. But. they will not succeed. unless you help. Please. make 1981 a great year. May the holidays bring peace and joy to you and your family. Our b~t wishes. THUMPER FREAK. GOPHER & THUMPER FREAK.JR. Downey. CA Chicken flock squawk Although my antecedents were all city folk. it was always their custom to supplement the family larder with a ~able garden and flock of chickens; so that. as a boy. my world was bound by a wire fence and shared by milling crowds of clucking. crowing, pecking, essentially stupid birds whom I snved as a menial laborer for a w~kly allow· ance . Being a rather mean little kid. I delight~ in teasing the chickens. who were easily ala~ by unfamiliar sounds and movements. For example, I would toss an old tattered and malig· nant teddy ~r up in the air so it would land in the yard lilt.e a pNdacor from the sky. They would set up a tre· endous clamor of squawking and flut· t~ring, and our back yard would be 10lIt in a hugr. swirling cloud of dust and featben from which rose the piteous din of screeching birds. Eventually I grew up, escaped from the chicken yard and discontinued the family custom of keeping a garden and dom~tic fowl. I don't miss tbe fence or the noise or the smell or the toil. but recently I was engulfed with a wave of nostalgia for that great hue and cry of frightened birds when I read the following in the Victory Valley Daily Press: "Several BLM employees said they had he¢n told that Louis McKey of Fontana, the 'Phantom Duck of the Desert' who has become a rallying point for dissatisfied din·bikers, walked into a San Bernardino hearing Monday night wearing a loaded ,45·caliber handgun on his hip and was ~coned from the room by deputy sheriffs and cited. WINSTO BEAUMONT Wrightwood. CA Enduro-izing A real hand to te CEA for slaging the 1980 Last Chance Enduro. II had aU the proper ingredients: tm- loops per day. excellent terrain variety, good check personnel and quantity, and I believe - no zerOll. The only short· comings: one checkpoint clod a minute off (later corrected), and the last check in tbe third loop Sunday was changed to an o~tjon check. At a recent district enduro, almost none of the 200cc class. riders (among others) could make an exrra long, extra sandy, last loop uphill. Since no alternate route existed with SO f~t of the marked trail. there was maa AMA rule-breaking to go around the mountain or find alternate routing that was passable. The only l!OOcc rider I know of who made it over the f1I4Tled trail was the incredible Tracy Walters. To the CEA.'s eveorlasting credit. no such impossible for smaR-bores hills esiIted. Their _ was, in my opinion, a model AMA enduro. It was also perhaps the overall best enduro in recent memory. The qualityof the Last Chance de· sened far _ than the approximate' Iy 180 turnout. Now while it's early, bopefully eRC and AMA enduro people can work together to avoid con· flicting dates. for 1981 events. There is no doubt that the CRC Sanla ClaW! Enduro hun the CEA's draw. Probably the reverse is abo tru~. There are- few enough endllJ'Oll in So Cal left now. Let's not 10IIe any more. BILL HERNDON Barbalders M/C .Pasadena Suzuki P.S.
