Husky rider Clark Jones and Suzuki ace Bob Elliott were both in contention for the win for most of the moto although problems forced Jones back to sixth at the checkers and Elliott settled for third. Amet explained between motOl, "I really feel comfortable with the way the Maico handles," and promptly went out and danced his way to the lleCond moto victory to clinch the overall. Elliott gave chase in moto two, but the day was Amet's as he knifed through lapped riders and always seemed in commend of the race. Clark Jones kept IUs Husky within striltiDJ[ distance, but fell abon at the flag finished third for the moto and founh for the day behind Elliott's second overall. Kirker's 2-6 score was good enough for third. Pete Soondand rode his Yatnaha to the Open Pro win SOing wire to wire in both 1IIOtOI. Also a fixture in the 250cc class on his Maico, Ziuerkopf is proving how well he can handle riding four motos ada). For the first four laps of Open moto one, it was David Williams (Kaw) leading the parade, but then Zitterkopf took over. Williams held on to a close second for several laps then staned to fade, possibly with mechanical troubles. Jon Friesen (C-A) was in third all the way. Williams' troubles became obvious when he didn't show up for the stan of the second round. It was a Zitterkopf runaway after he passed Friesen on the third lap. Friesen held on to second to take second place money over T. Batzle (KTM). The 250cc Pros again had a strong turnout, and again it was just that many more people for Yamaha of Redlands' Craig Gormley to beat. Gormley took to the lead of the first moto and then disappeared from sight. Andy Orescanin (Kaw) held on to second for several laps, then Zitterkopf took over on his Maico. From there on in, the top three spots were set. Fred Combs (Kaw) passed Pat Weber (Suz) for founh in the first half, and then made good time on the leaders, to fmish right behind Orescanin. The next race was just a duplicate of 'the first. Gonnley took off with the lead, but this time it was Combs who moved past Orescanin for second in the early laps. Zitterkopf came off the line in the back of the pack and so he spent mOlt of the race making up for 100t time. I n the end. he was a ble to displace Orescanin for third place be· hind Combs. Gonnley did it again in the 125cc class. The first moto saw him lead every lap. although Rick Rodgers (Kaw) was able to give him a good run for a while. Rodgers wound up in lleCond while JdJ Edwards and his water·cooled Suzuki were third. Rodgers led a considerable amount of moto two before giving in to Gormley. And then. while lined up for easy second place cash, Rodgers was forced to pull off the track with bike trouble, giving 1leC0nd overall to Edwards. F'mishing third was Clarke Goleman (Yam). Simons, Hans.n, LoceytopAME Thanksgiving GP By Judy Greenberg VALENCIA, CA, NOV. 23 American Motocross Enterprises held its third annual Thanks· giving Grand Prix with a $1,000 Pro purse along with drawiDgs for Russ Darnell's School of Motocross. Donnie Hansen, Tim Locey and Willy Simona wrapped it up for the 250, 500 and U5cc Pro classes after 50 grueling minutes over track, sand and water at Indian Dunes. 11Je red, white and blue of American Honda was much in evidence in the 250cc Pro class as Donnie Hansen and Johnny O'Mara immediately pulled away from the pack. David Taylor fought with Don Griewe (Cycle World Int.) for third with the Yamahas of Bill Hagen and Tibor Papp nat in line. The battle between Hansen and O'Mara heightened with time as O'Mara stayed right on Hansen's wheelloolting for a way by. Taylor sot some breathing room in third as Griewe faded back and was passed by Hagen. Tim Locey (Yam. Mtr. Corp.) wound up in the bushes during the first lap and had a lot of time and ground to make up. He advanced steadily and settled in third. Hansen stayed in control, stretching it out in the later laps. O'Mara ran shon of fuel, 10sing _ral positions. Locey'. tank abo etnptied and he didn't make it to the finish. Taylor. Hagen, Greiwe and Andy Sega1e rounded out the top five. Locey took the win for the 500cc Pros after moving from founh to the lead in one lap and bumping Griewe, Hagen and Man White (Int. Yam) back. With Locey out of reach, White passed Hagen and clOled on Griewe. Once by, he staned to pull away, but Griewe was right back on him a bit later and reclaimed second for the finish. Hagen and Kirk Sturgeon finished founh and fifth . The Simi Cycle Yamaha of Willy Simona went wire to wire for the U5ee Pros. Gary Denton (Fo:ll I: Honda) passed Jim Simona and John Langbammer for second and staned to prellUre Simons, but took a bad fall for a DNF. Steft Schmiu (Int. Yam) ran into trouble after his ho1esbot and was in last place. but quicltly moved up placing second when Denton dis· appeared. The Worlta Perionnance Honda of Dave Lynch pasaed Jon Onner for third with[1D1 Simona fifth. One of the largat c l _ was the 125cc Junion which _ won by Ra. Hahn on a MUFJl for Cycle Rider. NOV. 25 Again, the Lightweights M.C. had a big turnout for one of their IT scrambles held at Ascot Park ... 20 classes, yet, and each class got to run twice. The races would have been a bit longer, but Ascot personnel keep an eagle eye on the clock. Feature of the evening came when eN Managing Editor Charles Morey pulled the winning number out of the box for the neat 250cc din tracker you saw featured in November 19th's ialue. a Knight Racing·framed Kawasaki, along with a set of complete leatbers from Bob Agnes, a Mady hot shoe and a hebnet from KRW. F'lJ'St name drawn wasn't present, but the IIeCOnd one was, up and coming star Pete Hames. It seemed that almost every time we looked up. there was Cunis Cannon on the line again ... well, not really. but he did ride three classes. He won the Mini class with two straight in spite of a good try by Mike Kirby and Brent Bowers. Then it was off the tiddler bike and onto his 125. In that class. he and Roger Thompson emerged with three points apiece. but as Roger won the IIeCOnd one, that gallr him first overall.
