He took a first on Saturday and another one on Sunday. It was a first for the Desert Rats M.C. too. as they hosted this annual event with help from the Marine Corps Reserves at the Sunrise Valley Cycle Park. The course was a true combination of desert and motocross. innovated by Al Beckstead of the Rats. . Four races were held each of the two days of racing with the Vets leading things off as the first to try out the course. It was "Hoot" Gibson who took the immediate lead, followed by Bill Saltzman and Jim Bringhurst. The ensuing battle between Gibson and Saltzman continued all the way through the seven laps, with Saltzman finishing on top when Gibson ran out of gas just short of the checkered. The 125-175cc class was next. There was no doubt about who the leader was going to be as desert "C" ace Kevin Hopkins came off the start line at the point and never backed off the throttle the whole way. Danny Bookhart moved into the second spot followed by Balentine and Cliff Thomas. Donnie Morrison was nellt. leading the Amateur class. The final lap. however, found Hopkins still in the lead. but things had changed drastically in the ranks. Morrison had moved up into the second overall slot with Thomas now holding third. Last race of the day included the Sportsman class and the sidehacks. Sizzlin' Mike Sixbery took the lead off the start line. with the rest of the thundering pack close behind, headed by Dan Smith, Terry Davis, Chuck Stearns, Howard McCasland, and Bill Saltzman. Halfway through the desert section. however, Balentine had moved up from his spot back in the pack to a threatening third, and then, into second by home-check. Sixbery could feel the heat of Balentine's breath on the back of his neck for another lap and a half, until Balentine pulled around him in the desert section. The lead see-sawed back and forth as the two came into the MX sections, but once back out in the long desert stretch, Balentine began to pull away from Sixbery. Balentine held his lead past the checkered, although Sixbery continued to give him a run for his mc,>ney the whole way. Last race of tbe grand prix included the 250cc and Open Amateurs and Experts. Mike Sixbery took tbe lead witb a powenul burst of energy. Chasing behind was a roar of machines that would have completely unnerved a Beginnerl Chuck Miller moved into the second spot. follwed by Andy Jefferson. Bruce Ogilvie. Rick Jones. Ed Whisenant and Dan Ashcraft. By the first check Balentine had moved up from well back in the 20s off the start. to the eighth position followed by Danny Sanchez and Paul Christensen, As ·the riders came off the first lap. Balentine was knocking on Sixbery's door. wanting to get past him. Balentine chased Sixbery another lap before he finally slid by him just before home check. These two riders were well ahead of any of the rest of the pack. and so, as Balentine began to stretch out ahead of Sixbery, an even wider gap occurred between Balentine and the other racers. Sixbery ended up running out of gas, but still managed to finish sixth ~an. The second slot was earned by Miller (25Occ), followed by Smith (Open) and Ogilvie (Open); all three of these riders were close t~her. Results VETS EX: 1. B. 5Ihzmon; 2. J. Bringhunt; 3. E. Whit_. Palenske first In CEA Last Chance By Helen Ajay RED MOUNTAIN, CA, DEC. 6-7 Grant Palenske won the final AMA District 37 enduro event of the year, the California Enduro Assocication's two-day Last Chance. Palenske will be the D-57 Number Two Open rider in 1981. Riding a 440 Maico. he lost only three points over the two days. But so did two other riders. Palenske beat Kem Park by 29 second$. Tom Webb, a 1980 Regional Champion, Golden State Champion. and D-57 Number One Open for 1981, was third with a score of 5;201. Each day's course consisted of three loops for tbe A and B riders. two loops for the C's. On Day 2. each loop was run in the same order. only backwards. (The club was, however. nice enough to reroute one section on the day 2 third loop where three day 1 "downs" would have turned into "ups" ranging in difficulty from near impossible to totally impossible). They don't call it the Last Chance for nothing. The number one positions for \981 in both the 250cc and the women's categories were in contention right up until the bitter end. When the dust had settled. Pam Lebman had retained her Number One Woman Enduro rider ritle for the second year In a row.
