The 1 AMAS~~
serie& was a tough one.1'I1e announcement
at theStart of the year that two major manu-
fackJrers were going to field aR-out megabuck
efforts in AMA Superbike racing matte a lot
of people feel that YOshimura would be left
in the dust. Those peOple obviously don't
know Pops and Fujio Yoshimura.
From the comparatively small Yoshimura
headquarters in North Hollywood come some
of the fastest, most powerful and most reliable high-performance four-strokes in the
world. Winners of the 24-hour Bol D'Or Endurance Race in France. Winners of the 8-hour
Suzuka Endurance Races in Japan. And winners of more AMA Superbike .
races than any other team in
history. This is the legend of
Yoshimura. And it was this legend that was on the line
at the last race of the
season at Daytona.
Daytona. Its long
straights and
heavy, highspeed bank-,.ing have
probably seen more motors
idY
track thiS side of Indy. Daytona doesn't ask
for speed and reliability. It demands it. And if
your .equipment isdt llP to It\e demands, it'lt
leave you pushing back to the pits. Daytona
was a must win for Team Yoshimura and its
Number One rider Was Cooley.
What happened there is history. T.he precision, performance and POWer of the Yoshimura/Vetter Suzuki GSl000S was tested to
the maximum, and When Cooley dropped
the hammer, the 1980 AMA Superbike Championship belonged to Yoshimura.
And what happened to the main
competition? Broken dreams.
Broken hearted. Broken down.
Yoshimura. Super parts and
Superbikes that are second
to none.
