CA . - 14 Kent Pfeiffer placed second at the Hilltoppers GP.IFile photo.! ROSARITA BCH., BC, MEX., NOV 23 Craig Adams, riding his KTM for Adams Radiator, put it all together for this one and had a one minute lead over Premier Yamaha's Kent Pfeiffer at the finish of the 110-mile Hilhoppers GP at Rosarita Beach. The Hilltoppers M.C., who have been putting on races since 1947, also put it all together for an excellent Southland Racing Association· sanctioned event. They are a hard working, congenial club and profits from their events are donated to the Phantom Duck of the Desert, who they feel is the strongest friend of the off road user at this time. At 10 a.m. Sunday morning riders lined up on a bridge which crossed the Ensenada toll road for the start. Waves of five riders per line left every 10 seconds beginning with Open Experts including Seniors, and ending with the 80cc Beginners and one sidehack. At the beginning of loop one, Senior Lynn McGraw on his big Open Rustan Yamaha walked out front of Adams' 250cc. But, as the pair moved out onto the 22-mile course, McGraw kicked a buried rock and Pfeiffer's 250cc moved into second. Another 250cc machine, ridden by Danny Sanchez, worked by Paul Huffman's Open KTM for third spot and then the fun began. Several riders battling for front line position dropped out by the third lap and the fifth and sixth spots now belonged to 125cc Experts, Torsten Corum riding for Anaheim Husky and Bill Holmes, riding for the White Cloud Ranch of Malibu. On the first lap. Holmes seized and Mark Heth kicked a rock with the same injured foot that was healing from a recent serious break. Torsten, thinking his closest competition was out began to feel confident of his win and began to battle with Open Paul Hoffman for fun. Holmes, known to gain a second wind, came on stronger than ever in the last lap and passed 125cc Expert Lorne Crawford (Yam) and then took on the mighty McGraw before finishing one second behind his SCORE 1000km partner, Corum. Adams and Pfeiffer each pitted on lap four and Adams had the 18·yearold East/West rider right on his butt. Both had a few seconds of increased adrenlin flow when they came head on to a couple of local cars going backwards on the course. Pfeiffer laid it down and at the finish Adams was exactly one minute ahead. Adams and Pfeiffer were the only two riders who commented "Dust was no problem." McGraw teased Adams about the holeshot and the quiet, good· looking 23year-old Adams commented, "It's not who wins the battle, it's who wins the war," and win he did. Number nine overall spot went to the first 250cc Amateur, Ed Conners who played it fairly close with the second 250cc Amateur, 14th overall Neuton Brady. Conners' closet playmate was the first 125cc Amateur, the youn!!'est of the Pfeiffer brothers. 17-year·old Kurt, who took a 10th overall on his Premier Yamaha. Fourth 125cc Expert, 33-year-old Hector Ledezma, a Mexican national riding for Baja Motocross from Ensenada, gave Kurt and second Amateur Kevin Case, a good run for their money. This "old timer" has only been racing five years and all his racing has been in Mexico, which includes the 1980 SCORE season in Class 20. . Kurt and Case battled for first in class and exchanged places several times. Kurt went down pretty hard on a silt-covered, rut·infested hill, costing him his front brake. Case took the lead but the SCORE 1000km Class 20 winne.r had problems of his own and it was Pfeiffer who lOOk the checkered. Fifteenth overall, finishing on a flat was first 250cc Senior Vern Heth who finished 15 places ahead of his second place 250cc Senior, Don Mardon. This impressive rider spent most of his race battling with the 200cc Experts until he developed a flat front tire. Chuck Koistra and Richard Curlsun were first and second Senior Open Amateurs, and they gave each other a super ride before finishing 17th and 18th overall. The two leading Minis provided each other with competition plus. The winner, Bellflower Yamaha's Keith Senn, and Barry Crawford (Suz) stayed with in seconds of each other for three of the 22·mile laps. Senn went over an embankment, became separated from his bike. Unbeknownst , to Senn, Crawford's pit crew· pulled him out of the race at the end of lap three when his rear tire wouldn't hold air. Senn, trying to make up time, rode that last lap WFO, convinced Crawford would appear at any moment. Shannon Shamblin (Yam), put in an excellent ride and took first 80cc Amateur followed by seco?d 80cc Expert Ignacio Waumann (Kaw) from the Ensenada Club. The 250cc machines outran t e Opens in all classes. Chuck Montilipre took third amateur, 20th overall. First ovice John Sarrail was 19th, second Novice Ken Whitlock was 26th, and third ovice Scott McEwen was 28th. After the race a lengthy celebration took place at sign-up headquarters, the La Barca, while a Mariachi Mexican Band surrounded Craig Adams' table and played what else but Happy Birthdayl The Hilltoppen thank the La Barca, the Rosarita officials for all their help and a special thanks to Dr. Warren Barr who sacri· ficed his race to aid an unconcious rider he found on the course. Dr. Barr stayed with Ted VandenRaadt for 30 minutes until he could be picked up and returned to California for treat· ment. • Unofficial results OPEN EX: 1. PouI Huffmon; 2. Keith Fe.ing. OPEN AM: 1.
