MARYSVILLE, CA, NOV. 9
MarysviUe Motocross was alive
and well today, nourished from
the bottom by 36 Minis, supported on top by 36 Vets and OTs
and additionally bolstered by 13
Women riders, one of whom won a
free pair of Hi-Point boots. The boots
were awarded by a drawing of all first
moto winners. Along with the boots,
Marcy Lewis also took home a firstplace trophy for sweeping to the front
of both Women's motos.
Dave Wood (Yam) put together a
combination that spelled the overall
win in the 250cc Experts, but Dave
Coupe (Mai) won the first moto.
Coupe holeshot with Bryan Wargo
(Yam) and Allen Berluti (Mai) next in
line. Factory Suzuki rider Darrell
Shultz came around the first turn
eighth, but by the end of the second
lap, Shultz was breathing right down
Coupe's neck. Coupe brightened his
pace a little, but Darrell soon pulled
off into the pits for unspecified reasons,
taking the heat off Coupe who cruised
in for the win. Wood climbed up from
sixth place to finish second, Berluti
third, Wargo fourth.
Wood holeshot the second moto and
kept the gas on to assure his moto win
and first overall. Jim Ellis (Yam) was
soon up from fifth place into a rather
distant second which he held to the
finish line. Coupe, from farther back
yet, moved up into third place, but at
the checkered flag it was Shultz who
was in third place. Shultz had backed
off at the first turn, getting around
"safely but behind most of the other
riders. His charge through the pack
was by no means easy going. Eric
McKenna (Mai), George McNamara
(Yam), Brad Emery (Yam), BrianJodry
I (Suz), Wargo, Berluti and Coupe all
made him work for that third-place
finish.
The first three starters in moto one
of the 250cc Juniors were also the first
I'" three finishers.
Mark Ryan (Yam)
claimed the holeshot with Scott Sexton
(Yam) and Berkeley White (Suz) follow, jng. Ryan dropped to third and Sexton
_ and White took over first and second
all the way.
At the start of the second moto,
Sexton's tranny blew and he and
White were both on the ground while
the others were off and racing. John
Coulombe (Yam), fourth in moto one,
had the lead from start to finish for
first overall. Brian Magee (Suz) could
not displace Coulombe, although he
came mighty close, and finished
second for second overall.
Eric McKenna and Dave Coupe
fought tooth and nail in both Open
Expert motos. McKenna had the lead
off the start in the first moto, Coupe
next and Wood in third. Coupe and
McKenna diced for it, but Coupe
came across the finish line first.
Wood holeshot moto two, but again
I
the lead was a dice between Coupe and
I McKenna. Those two red bikes were
never more than a few yards apart. On
the final lap, McKenna nicked
Coupe's bike while trying to get by on
the inside and stalled his engine long
enough to let Coupe complete the final
lap in relative comfort.
