CRC rule book not ignored I wish to correct any misunderstanding that may have been conveyed in Brett Tilley's letter published in your Nov. 12, 1980 issue. Mr. Tilly's letter discussed a protest which he filled with CRC concerning the Iron Horse Enduro on Oct. 12, 1980_ It also expressed his disappoint· ment in the outcome of that protest. He claimed in effect that CRC did not give due consideration to the protest and that CRC ignored its own rule book in rendering a decision. These claims are not true. The protest concerned a rider leaving the coune to make repain in the pits and then returning to the course to continue the event. It was funher complicated because a buddyup rider was transferred to another bike for pan of the ride while the repain were made_ Unfortunately this specific situation is not covered in the CRC rules. In fact, it's also not covered in Dist. !!7 rules, AMA rules or any other of the many rule books to which we referred for guidance. Therefore, it was necessary to make a ruling based upon interpretation of the rules, past practices and consultation with other organizations. The protest referred to CRC Rule V-A-!! "No rider may knowingly or unknowingly cut the course. All riders must stay within 50' of either side of course to avoid disqualification." It claimed that by going more than 50' from the course the rider should be disqualified_ However, this rule coven cutting the course, not leaving the course to return to it_ The 50' rule was needed to clairify cutting the course (shonening the course to avoid obstacle). It was never intended to apply to all circumstances. For example, riden who miss course markings normally leave the course by more than 50' before returning to it, and this has never cawed disqualification. Mr. Tilly also stated that several witnesses were not contacted to verify the incident. In this case, facts of the protest were not contested and therefore witnesses were not necessary in order to detennine if the incident actually occurred. A review of past practices including other organizations such as AMA indio cated that returning to the pits for repain is ~nerally accepted_ It is usually a penalty to the rider due to the time lost and it does not violate the usual rule against organized road suppon. Funher consultation with other organizations indicated that leaving the course and returning to it should not be grounds for disqualification. A buddy-up entry was interpreted to involve a team effon including; one driver, one buddy and one motorcycle. The incident appean to violate this interpretation. The protest was resolved as follows: The rider's individual entry was not disqualified; the buddy-up entry was disqualified. CRC is deeply concerned with the quality and fairness of its events. Careful consideration is given to all protests. JERRY McNEAL President, CRC Rivenide, CA Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News. Inc. Send letters 10 Voices.
