Halloween finIsh toAMEnight mlnlcross By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 31 The 1980 AME Minicycle track program came to a close this evening in the best event of the season. It was October 31, so the • 26 promoters had a few trealS for those who could do a winning mck. What did they give away? Well, !hey had a whole list of prizes. The overall poinlS winners in each class won a Bell helmet that was turned into a planter. it was very unique. Other prizes included Chain-Kote, Dura-Lube, wallelS, handlebars and shoulder pads. Since the AME has given so much to the riden throughout the year, in turn the riders gave AME owners Jerry and Shirley Shore a gift. Jerry said later, "I guess there still are some good people left; I didn't know what to say'" Far the past two weeks, James Chamberlin has been winning the Pee Wee trophy dash and winning good prizes. Tonight the..., was a new winner and this was Tony Sulek. Tony won the trophy dash and got himself a new set of shoulder pads. But then he generously gave them away to someone else. You see, there still are some good people left. In the Pee Wee event, Lancaster racer Sulek won the first moto ahead of Ronnie Densford from Helmet Sales. It turned out quite differently in the final moto and last week's winner Chamberlin took the lead ahead of Sulek and Densford. But with a 1·2 score, Sulek placed the finest in the final resullS and won it over Chamberlin and Densford. Danny Lamb had the best costume get-up. His father Gary, who is the park manager, turned Danny into a headless rider. Danny wo..., an extra large Cole Bros. jeney and had it propped up above his head. He was able to look out of a slot cut in the middle of the jeney. It was very strange looking. Lamb won the Junior Cycle Stock and Modified classes. The most successful Junior Cycle Junior racer was Paul Matthews from Ventura. Paul won the Stock race easily with two firslS over Steven Kotajarvi and Bubba Erickson. In the Modified contest. Paul won the first moto over Erickson, but then Ronnie Densford took the win in the final race. With a 1-2 finish, Matthews came out of it the best overall ahead of De~ord, Erickson and Kotajarvi. By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA, OCT. 30 Everyone has really enjoyed racing at OCIR this season. PromoteT Steve Crosby and R.A.C.E. found the turnouts to be better than the year before which was their first try at this track. But just lik~ three other night racing programs, tonight was the fmal event of the season for OCIR motocross racing. There is no official word as to when the 1981 season will start, but it will probably happen again in April. The..., are a lot of Minicycle racers competing here each week and this time the largest class that formed was the Mini Beginner Division One race. Some of there racen just finished racing down at San Diego with the CRC. Wade Bone was down there and tonight he had no !rOUble against 13 other competitors. In the first moto, Roy Watkins gave Wade some competition and led for three laps or so. Wade took over from there and the Captain Marvel rider, Watkins, was second in front of John Cameron. In the second moto, Bone took better control of things and led every lap for the solid win ahead of Watkins and Mark Bourbeau who is another Captain Marvel racer. Mark Allen and his brother Mike are Ascot regulars. Mark came out to give OCIR a try and it was a great idea. In the 125cc Novice class, he took the big trophy. Jim Kennedy was on his way to doing that, but dropped . out after a few laps of leading and then Allen took over. Dan Rees from Sand Rails Unlimited was second in that first moto ahead of John Whitfield. In the second moto, Gary Milhoan was in fIrst for a couple of laps. Gary is sponsored by Todd Peterson. Mark Allen took over soon and held the lead to the end over Jon Thomas and Milhoan who was moved back to third by the sixth lap. David Fontes may have won the 125cc Intermediate race last week, but tonight Lyle Babi was out. John McCaughey led the first lap in the first moto, but then Lyle took control and led it to the fmish. McCaughey was second and Fontes was third. The final moto was a bit more exciting because some passing was seen. Babi held the first place position for about half the race till McCaughey crept up and passed him. Three laps late.r, Babi had the lead again and he finished in front of Fontes and McCaughey. Mark Anderson from VIP Racing went on to win the 250cc Intermediate class and this rider from Whittier is really taking the wins, between Saddleback and OCIR. Mark has also chalked up a few wins at Ascot now and then. Anderson took two first place moto wins for the best trophy ahead of Chris Fleming, Roben Sheldon and Roben Schneider. On the track at the same time, the 500cc Intermediate people were going at it. Consistent racer Don Stanley lost the first moto to John Anderson, but made up for it in the fmal race which gave him the overall win ahead ofJohn Anderson and Mike Stepalt. OCIR MX By Tom Corley By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA, OCT. 23 GARDENA, CA, OCT. 29 The 125cc Intennediate class is usually small at OCIR, but man, can it be excitingl Sometimes it is a good three-man battle, but Well, the lIth year of CMC night motocross racing at Ascot Park came to an end tonight. This season was a good one and the opening night had the largest turnout seen in many years. But now the racing will stop for a good five months and should resume in the first week of April. Till then, the riders will have to concentrate on their daytime skills. The Hovis brothers from Whittier are really picking up tbe wins in the Minicycle classes. The Mini classes filled the first three races on the program. Dan Hovis entered the Mini Intermediate class which was tbe second race. Hovis stayed ahead of the eight-man class on his Yamaha in both motos. In the first moto Johnny Whitsett from Gardena was second be· hind Hovis and Richard Reese was third. Hovis took the second moto win and this time Reese advanced to second place while "Blastin' Buck" Ybarra trailed in third. Whitsett, who did well in the first, was now in sixth. Tbe Mini Junior contest was a real struggle for Richie Hovis, but when it was all done, he won first ove.rall. Tim Lineban races his Yamaha mostly at OCIR and does real well provided he doesn't fall and get hun. Well in the first moto, Linehan took the lead and win ahead of Edward Gauley and Ruben Padilla while Hovis was fourth. John Mathews was on top in the final moto after doing poorly in the first race and he edged out Hovis and Ruben Mendez. Linehan was fifth place. Because everyone was so incon· sistent in this race, Hovis was able to get the best score for the night even though he never took a first place. On the official results it ended up like this: Richie Hovis, Tim Linehan and Ruben Mendez. If every racer was as talented as Robert Ottow, there would be no need this time, the competition consisted of four people. John McCaughy was on his way to taking the win, but then bike probl~s started taking place so David Fontes was the winning man. McCaughey had the only Suzuki in the race and it may have been the fastest, but that wasn't enough. He led the first moto in winning style before his Suzuki developed a flat tire. This is usually enough to knock a racer out of the top spot, but John rode it with a mushy tire and was able to keep abead till the flnt wave of the cbeckered flag. Jack Scott was second ahead of David Fontes and Dennis Hulen. Dennis is not a regular contestant and can be found at Saddleback more often. He is just getting over a broken foot and is doing great. There wasn't much that McCaughey could do with his Suzuki to fIX the tire situation. So, he borrowed a Suzuki 100 from his buddy Bob Graham and raced the second moto with it. One would think that the bike would be completely underpowered, but as it turned out, John led the race for six laps. He had no problems with his bike in the first moto until the flat tire and now something happened to tb~ borrowed machine. The gas line popped off and this did him in. The smaller Suzuki has never been riden so fast or held wide open as much and perhaps it couldn't handle the faster pace. Fontes went on to win this moto over Scott, McCaughey and Hulen. The third race of the evening had two classes involved - the l25cc Novices and the l25cc Beginners Division One class. When they combine the races like this. it is important to watch them from the very beginning because soon the riders mingle with one another and it becomes hard to
