Smith had pulled within three bikes lengths of the fleeing Hardick. but the laps ran out and Hardick held on. Turner won handily followed by Hardick and Smith. Juan Benavidez (Yam) was fourth. Moto two was the icing on the cake for Turner. After placing second best in I 'lth the 125 and 250cc Pro classes. he c.ecided he'd better win one class for the day. Turner's 1-1 score in the Open class was good enough for the overall. Chasing Turner in moto two was Micky Dymond (Yam) who turned in a very fine ride to stay ahead of Val Tamietti (Mai) and Smith. The Husky rider collected second overall (!l-4) and Tarnietti (8-!l) was third. Hardick had a DNF in moto two and finished down in the standings. Results JR CVC JR: 1. J. David (Vam); 2. M. Johnson,Jennings and Turner again afCMC Saddleback MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE. CA. NOV. 2 Sunday, November 2 was the last points race for the 1980 season to be held at Saddleback Park. All three Professional classes look as if they are pretty well decided. RickJohnson leads the 125cc Pros. Scott Johnson in the 2505 and Val Tamietti in the Opens. RickJohnson continued his winning ways this Sunday by scoring a 1-1 moto tally with no rider even getting close. Jeff Jennings (Hon) also had a perfect day as he won the 250cc class with "Radical" Ron Turner (SUI) collecting the Open class gold with his 1-1 score for the day. In moto one. Ricky Arnold (SUI) led • the 15-rider field of 125cc Pros to the first turn with Johnson. Mark Denning ~ (OCC) and Eric Baker (Yam) in close pursuit. Rick Johnson took no time putting his Cliff Lett-tuned machine re into the lead by lap two and hardly had any more problems for the 14-lap event. The race for second place was on. Six riders were so bunched up. they lfooked like a parking lot - Arnold. Denning. Mike Beier (Yam). Kevin Steele (Yam), Baker and Ron Turner. As the race progressed, it was Turner who finally put on the show. He passed < the four riders immediately ahead of him and on the last lap. pulled to within one bike of Beier. The two riders scooted towards the flag and Turner edged out Beier by a nose for second. Fourth went to Scott Manning (Yam) and fifth to Arnold. In moto two. Johnson and Turner led the pack for most of the race. Manning made a mad surge for the lead. but placed ~hird. In the overall standings, Johnson's 1-1 obviously won the overall fo.llowed by Turner (2-2) and Manning (4-!l). Beier was fourth at !l-4. The 250cc Pro class was really up for grabs. Thirty-one anxious riders stonned for the lead and Kawasakimounted Matt Devich had it just inches ahead of Jeff Jennings (Hon). T. Fitch (Yam). Robert Elliott (SUI) and Ron Turner. As Devich began to fall off the pace, Jennings took the lead and Turner closed quickly. Coming from the middle of the pack was Jim Tarantino (Hon) who pulled up on Fitch for third. The event stabliled and Jennings and Turner began to pull away from the field. Jennings won easily with Turner second then Tarantino and Brian Maloney (Hon) who nailed Fitch on the last lap for fourth. Moto two was a carbon copy of the first event. Jennings again outran Turner for the lead and the win, but this time Maloney stayed up with the leaders and finished third. The overall still went to Jennings with his impressive 1-1 score. giving the runner up position to Turner. Maloney was third overall with two consisten! 4-!l rides with Robert Elliott fourth. Winding up the top five was Tony Gomel(TC). Lee Ramage (Yam) pulled the holeshot in the Open Pros. but lost ground quickly as Dale Lewis (Mai), Turner and Clint Hardick (SUI) were knocking . at his door. On lap two Tl.\rner took Harpwood hammersCMC AscotMX brothers are hot on their Suzukis and tonight Bill smoked everyone. Bruce didn't make it in each moto, but will probably get them next time. Bill took the winning trophy over Terry bell and Wayne Gray. Randy Sciarra has sort of been racing off and on in the 250cc Intennediate class. He came back into it tonight to find out that DeVon Farley has moved into the Pro class. Sciarra has been letting Ron Olson and John Stapleton take the latest wins. but he returned this time for the best finish. In the first moto, Sciarra and Olson went at it. but soon a gap opened up and then Stapleton came barreling through. It was easy for John as he applied some of his football tactics. Sciarra showed them who the boss was in the second moto. though. and took the win ahead of Stapleton and Jim Thomson who was just m9ved up from the Juniors. o 00 0') Results 50 JR: 1. John _ISuzl. New riders come in while the more experienced ones move up into the Pro contests. This is what makes the races exciting and more challenging for everyone involved. In the 125cc Intennediate class at Ascot, there has been one rider who has taken total control. This man is Mark Harpwood from Torrance and in _tonight's race. he took the win. Because of his winning performance. Harpwood is on his way to becoming a fast Pro. At the same time, there was a new rider involved. This was Mike Allen who took the big leap from a fast Junior to the Intermediate class. Bellflower rider Del Shamblin was on the gas in the first 125cc Intermediate moto and got the wintling edge over everyone. Sean Gilboy took second and Mark Allen, who has been a regular in this class, took third. Mark did well. but his brother Mike had problems and it should be interesting to see how they do against one another in future racing. Improving from a fourth-place finish in the first moto. Mark Harpwood advanced to the front of the pack in the final moto. He outmanuevered Mark Allen and Scott Graham for the lead. Overall, it was Harpwood, Allen, Gilboy and Shamblin. The 100cc class is fast disappearing in many programs. but at Ascot there is usually a.sf')all class. The Delgado ) . . . - ..... Erickson excels at AMEnight • • m,n,cross By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA. OCT. 24 Once again, the Mini track program outlasted the AME big bike program on the International track. The last few weeks of racing here at the Dunes have really been great for all of the participating Mini racers. They have been having trophy dashes and other special events. James Chamberlin won the Pee Wee trophy dash for the second week in a row and he is really making off with the goods. The Pee Wee riders are not the only ones who get a chance at winning something extra. At the end of the night. they had a special team race. This was a lot of fun and the team of Buddy Dumo and Steven Kotajarvi won aboard a Yamaha 60. Everyone is looking forward to next week's program because they will have a costume contest. The only way that you will recognile a rider will be by his bike number. Ronnie Densford from Helmet Sales ran away with the Pee Wee Stock win and won one of the kites that they.gave out to all of the winners. Hopefully, there will still be some good kite flying weather left. In the first moto. Jimmy Chamberlin won on his S. V. Radiator(Continued to page 22) 19
