Schlegel shines at Dodge City MX By Mitch Rorabaugh DODGE CITY, KS, OCT. 26 Jake Schlegel of Dodge City used "home-track advantage" and an aggressive style at the Wilroad Garden motocross facilities to ~mer the 250cc and Open Senior WInS. The opening mota of the 250cc Seniors had Schlegel jumping to the lead with his Honda over Keith Stanton, John Campbell and Steve Ellis. Schlegel . established a comfortable lead which he steadily increased until the end of the mota. Ellis, mounted on a Suzuki, worked past semi-retired Maico master Campbell on the second lap and then both got past Stallton's Yamaha on the next go 'round. Stanton charged back by Campbell on the white flag lap and inherited second place again when Ellis fell. Campbell claimed third. The cold, gusty winds persisted as the second mota rolled around and Stanton charged over the gate and through the first tum ahead of Schlegel, Kevin Wagoner, Ellis and Campbell. Stanton and Schlegel banged bars for the first half of the mota over the entire rough, sandbased course, their battle for the overall coming to a climax on the fourth lap. The two entered a sweeping left-bander side by side and met on the same berm exiting as neither appeared willing to shut off. Both went down. Schlegel was up first and able to restart, pulling back into the mota just a coupLe of bike lengths ahead of Ellis, who had been a distant third. Stanton didn't· restart and elected to walk to the pits. Schlegel's rhythm seemed off and the pressuring Ellis sLipped past for the lead and the second mota win over Schlegel, Campbell and Wagoner. SchlegeL's 1-2 tally was good enough for the overall. Schlegel took the overall win in the Open Seniors with similar finishes, a 12 tally. Riding a Yamaha, Schlegel got the lead in the opening mota right out of the gate and never looked back, winning by a large margin. The race for second was where everyone's attention was as Dave Emerick of Hoxie held 'off Ellis for the final two Laps to narrowly take it. Campbell took fourth on his two-year-old Maico. Schlegel again got the holeshot in the second mota over Emerick and Ellis. Ellis wasted no time this mota and overtook Emerick on the second lap and moved up on Schlegel, trailing closely until the fifth lap when the Johnson Suzuki rider jammed by for the lead. Ellis went on to win it and take second overall behind Schlegel. Emerick claimed third and third overall. Dodge City's Troy Rhoten is back after a long layoff due to leg injuries and completely dominated the 125cc Senior class on a Honda. He even had time to dust himself off after a last-lap fall in the second mota before rolling in for the win. Second place each time out was Craig Robl, third Tom Hickey and fourth on a Suzuki borrowed from Kurt Ross, Mitch Rorabau~h. Randy Shironaka of Johnson claimed the 125cc Junior win. He overtook Kurt Ross on the second lap of the first mota to take that mota win with Ross hanging on to second over David Gall and Scott Ellis. Ellis jum ped to the lead of the second mota and steadily stretched it out for the win. Ross controlled second place for the first half of the mota before crashes dropped him back and eventually out. Shironaka moved up from fourth for second at the end of the mota for the overall win. Todd Witten of Pratt rolled in third for third overall behind Ellis. In 250cc Junior action, it was Dodge City's Tracy Bailey winning both motos. John Finch of Woodward, OK., edged out Richard Kaiser for second overall with a 3-2 tally over a 2-3. David Heinzig of Woodward won both motos of the Open Juniors with his Yamaha after seizing each holeshot. Bob Gaston took second when Rick Shironaka dropped out midway through the fITSt mota, and combined it with a second mota third for second overall. Copeland's Greg Downing claimed third overall over Shironaka. Mike Schmidt led every lap of the Mini Juniors until falling on the final one in the last mota and being relegated to fourth overall. Taking advantage of Schmidt's misfortune was Dodge City's Ted Martin who won the final mota for the overall. Great Bend's Joel Wise went 3-2 for second over Eric Webb. Scott Ellis traded mota wins with Bruce Guy for the win in the Mini Seniors. • Results MINI JR: 1. Ted Martin (Suzl; 2. Joel Wise (Vaml; 3. Eric Webb ISuzl. MINI SR: 1. Scott Ellis ISuzl; 2.
