Sportsmen jam at CoronaMX By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, OCT. 24 Corona's infamous reverse falling start gate disappeared last Friday night so the big boys could enjoy it at the San Diego Motocross Fi· .24 nals, but it will be back in its usual parking space next week so the Corona officials can give their green flag a rest. In I25cc Novice division one, mak· ing the best of the old fashion start was Pat Schreffler (Hon), who nailed the holeshot in moto one. Schreffler's main competition came from David Jan (Suz) who put himself in second and started dogging Schreffler's tracks. But Schreffler managed to hold out for the rest of the moto to take the win. Coming in third was Will Clemson (Yam) ahead of Gary Thompson (Yam) and Tony Rodriguez (Kaw). The second race had Jeff Frye (Hon) getting into the lead with both Scbref· fler and Jan following. Jan managed to pass Schreffler and then he went after Frye. passing him on the fourth lap. His lead. however, was short·lived. A mistake on the next lap cost him two positions and put Frye back on top. Then Schreffler opened it up to take the lead on the white flag lap..Jan managed to move into second at the same time setting the final finishing order at Schreffler, Jan, Frye, Clemson and Rodriguez. The second division of 125cc Novices had Mark Milam take the win with a 1·2 score. He ran away with the first round while Paul Ellis struggled to net a second over Mike Callahan (Suz). But in the next race Milam got off to a poor start and had to be satis· fied with a second behind Bob Hedeman (Hon), who got fourth in round one. Dan Reese (Suz) took third this molO to net third overall be· hind Milam and Hedeman. The first 250cc Intermediate class start saw Mike Roach (Yam) wheelie away with the lead. It took Pat Weber (Suz) a couple of laps to get into the number two spot and he finished there ahead of Mike Wilkinson (Yam) and Rick Vanderham (Yam). In the next round, Roach was again on top of the first lap but Wilkinson and Weber were close behind. Weber got into second and then inberited the lead when Roach dropped out of the race. Wilkinson was second over Scott Conaway (Yam) and Rick Vanderham (Yam). Keith Williamson (Yam) took the 250cc Pro class hands down in spite of it being his first race in months due to injuries. Andy Northrup, who usually dominates the class, wasn't racing be· cause of a broken arm. He broke it last week at Corona and won the race anyway without even knowing how bad he was hurt. Taking second this week was Tony Sullivan (Kaw). Results MINI BEG: 1. Ross Deno"e (Yam); 2. Eric Sacken (Yam): 3. Derril Swinfard (SUllo MINI BEG: 1. GerTy Goni""" IKaw); 2. Shawn Davidson IYoml; 3.
