OCT. 19 Don Mathews and Mike Steams notched the overall win in the Jmperial Valley M.C. team race held here today. The course was laid out in a lopsided figure eight, the p part 23 miles long and bottom half 10 miles. Each rider was to take the 53 niles before changing partners. Marty Tripes was the first rider in tn the top by one and a half minutes. ,Hter refueling and doing the next 30 niles, Tripes gained another two illnutes over Don Mathews. Jim \,jichols took off for Marty and \fathews turned it over to the feisty YIike Stearns. Stearns was smokin' but .ould not catch Nichols by the end of he fi rst loop. Nichols hung in there for about 20 'iles before Stearns finally got past 'tim. You could see Stearns flying 1cross, the lakebed toward home check, Nichols in hot pursuit, when roddenly 100 yards out, no sound. He wasted for a ways and dropped a gear. 'he Maico choked and died rolling to < stop at the checkered flag. Semi· shocked, Stearns sat there for a minute fooking down and said, "I think there is something wrong with my bike." Nichols flew in for second as Stearns klcked the bike again. It spun with a wretched sound leaving no doubt it had given up a piston. Leon Livingston/Randy Hollenbeck took third while Ric Secor (solo) copped fourth on a I 75cc enduro bike. Dale Stevenson/Morgan Malocco were fifth. Bill Reams/Scott King topped the Vets Expert class with Roger Adsit/Bob Larson right behnd them for second. Mike McCurry riding solo in the 250cc Novice class took home the tirst place gold. Bruce Cornell/Jack Neeley were first Senior Experts and eighth overall. Next IVMC race is a point to on November 16.
