TEN YEARS AGO o 00 0') T.C. ChriltiaDIOn had a good time at the AMDRA Drag Race Nationals in Atto. NJ. as he took Top Eliminator honors on his double·engined Norton with a 9.60 e.t. at 155.00. Speedway racers took to Ascot's half mile oval and Australian Jim Airey showed 'em how to do it with a victory in the Scratch Main. Bill Cody bested Scott Autrey in the Handicap feature. SoCal M.C. hosted a hare and hound in Red Rock Canyon, complete with the infamous SoCal Downhill, and Gene Smith came up the winner on a Triumph. Rich Thorwaldaon had a big lead. but collided with a truck on the course and DNF. Terry Clark (H· D) topped Jack Morgan (Hod) in the Trailbike class. Max Swiuer (Hus) was the winner of the Nevada State Championship Hare Scrambles at Searchlight, NV, defeating Don Watkins (Mon) and Jack JohlUOn (Hon). D·~7 desert point standings in the Heavyweight and Trailbike divisions were announced. Among the heavies, Rich Thorwaldaon had a narrow lead over, defending champ Whitey Martino. Jack Morgan had a huge lead over Terry Clark. The Hayward Motorcycle Club's Cowbell Enduro was hit by rain. and in the ensuing mess over 600 riders got stuck in the mud, some having to spend the night in the forest. CZ got its first overall win in the Inter· Am Series when Ottakar Toman failed to win a single moto at Houston, TX, but was consistent enough to do well in all three. Sylvain Geboen (Suz) won one moto, placed second in another. but was three laps down in the other. and could only manage second overall. John DeSoto (CZ) placed fifth overall for top American honors. In another Inter·Am event, this one in Phoenix, AZ. Bengt Aberg (Hus) was the narrow winner over Ake JonllOn (Mai). Willi Bauer (Mai) rounded out the top three, while Husky's Bob Gr.-i finished as first Yank. Joel Robert (Suz) continued his Trans·AMA Series win binge with a two·moto blast at SaddIeback Park besting teammate Olle PeteTllOn's ~. 2. Husky·mounted Bill Clemenu was first American. Former eN editor Terry Pratt inter· viewed the two men responsible for an up and coming racing effort: Jim, Doyle and Kenny Roberta. Doyle sponsored' Roberts in his successful Novice season and said, "I expect to sponsor and manage Kenny to number one in the nation. That's my goal in the whole venture." Doyle, an airline pilot, said Roberts would be closely associated with the Yamaha team in his Junior year. The interview ended with a note on Roberts' forays into road racing with a third in the Open Expert class on a Kawasaki 500 at an AFM race, and plans for Daytona 1971.
