TEN YEARS AGO The continuing Trans-AMA series hit Dallas, TX, and appropriately enough, the winner's initials were J. R. Though not a member of the Ewing family, Belgian Jad Robert took the International class win, defeating Suzuki teammate Ole Petel'SllOn and BSA's Jeff Smith. CZ-mounted Brad Lackey was top American at sixth overall, one position in front of Dick Burleson (Hus). The Inter-Am series played to a Colorado audience, with Suzuki's Sylvain Geboen competing on machinery recovered from thieves, and taking the overall win. Christer Hammargren (Hus) was second overall ahead of Jacqua Vernier, and John DeSoto (CZ) was top American at fourth overall. NORRA played host to the Ensenada to La Paz Mexican 1000 off-road race and Mike Patrick and Phil Bowen took their big· bore Yamaha to the motorcycle win. Recovering from a broken chain, Whitey Martino and Makolm Smith (Hus) placed second, eight minutes behind the leaders. The overall winners of the event were S~ddleback owner Vic Wilson and Drino Milkr in a VW-powered buggy. The Dirt Diggers' ann~l two-day extravaganza at Hopetown saw a special exhibition class race for a $2,500 purse and PreRon Petty took home the winner's share, edging out RUIa Darnell, Billy Clemenu and Bryar Holcomh. Expert winners over the weeke.nd included Petty, Gene Cannady, Larry Shoemaker, Carl Cranle, Larry Watlins, John Rice and Gene Smith. The American Motorcycle Associalion's Congress met, and changed the name of the class for middle-level Pros from Amateur to Junior. They also passed the following silencer rule: "All events are required to be run with machines having a muffler meeting an established case rating standard. The only exceptions to this are machines used in road races, din tracks, outdoor short tracks, hillclimbs, scrambles, motocross, ice race, drag race and record trials. Barry Briggs, Jim Airey, Ivan Mauger and Dave Gifford made up the winning team. Ron Pierce and Don Emde were the ,top riders at a road race at Carlsbad Raceway, each winning two GP classes apiece. The third place rider in the 350ccJunior GP class was Wa Cooley, JI. Trespassing charges against Doug Johns and others in a controversial incident in Bean Canyon were dropped by the prosecution because of lack of evidence. 5
