naeta- Northern California-Northern Nevada·Oregon-Washington-ldaho-Utah-AI emerged with the number one spot and stretched his lead without ever being threatened. McElroy did likewise with second spot. Stitser scrapped his way up to third and Balentine to fourth. Thumper addict Darrol Brown (Hon) crashed heavily while challenging for fourth and DNF. Seconds after Brown's soil sample, Dan Simonian (Hon) bit the dust in the same place with the same result, a DNF. Buttner now has a 1-1-2-1 record towards the overall series win. The biggest drama of this race came from the weatherman. The first event was a horror of a dust bowl and the Flying W's promised tbat next time there would be no dust problem. However, in spite of the promoters' rain dancing, the hot dry weather persisted through the preceding Saturday. The Flying W's spent many days soaking the track with any device that would haul water. At the last minute on raceday morning, the rains came. The result of all this liquid attention was mud-o-cross at its finest for the 100 riders. By-'n'-by the weather eased and the track surface averaged out generally pretty well. The Open Junior bash was highlighted by Dan Dossey, also out of Carson Marine/Yamaha, dominating the class both motos and by Tim Dyer (Kaw) who broke his KX420 clean in two while leading the first lap of the first moto. Said it was the hardest getoff he ever did. 1 believe it! As usual. chaos reigned in the Open !'Novice wars. Maico pilots Jim Williaman and Loren Caudle went one· two wire to wire in the first moto. Mark Martinmaas, aboard a Honda four· stroke with a square tube frame and Suzuki plastic, worked his way into third on the last lap. Willaman didn't show up to start the second moto. AI Kuffel (Mai) took the second moto lead for three laps until Eric "Hole" Schacht (Mai) moved into command. After a brief lunge into second place where he overcooked it, Martinmaas settled for another third spot. Results OPEN EX: 1. R. Bunner IVam); 2. A. McElrov IMail; 3. R. Balentine IKTMI. OLPEN JR: 1. Bertram bests course at .Cowbell enduro By Rex McClellan LAKE PILLSBURY, CA, OCT. 11 Dave Bertram took top honors .at the Hayward Motorcycle Club's 34th annual Cowbell enduro that was quite different than those of the recent past. Threatening skies greeted riders as they awoke in the Mendocino National Forest north of Ukiah. Rain had been forecast and many riders were praying for some of the wet stuff to help keep the thick dust down to a bearable level. It had not rained for five months and the powdery dust was quite deep in some places. Traditionally, the Cowbell had been the first enduro of the fall season in northern California. and has also been one of the toughest with extra misery. being provided by the usual dust and hot weather. The previous week had seen temperatures near the 100 degree mark and many riders were not exactly looking forward to 100 miles of dust and heat. However, the first storm of the season brought intermittent light rain throughout the day that was a relief to most riders. A few riders who couldn't believe that the weather could change so dramatically rode wrihout jackets and were quite uncomfortable. In a significant change from the past, the HMC did not have an enduro that was more like a timed hare scrambles. The layout of the course was more sophisticated than the Cowbell and most other District 36 enduros have used recently. After the first check, which most everyone was late to, was. the first of three 10-minute resets. Quite a few riders who are not used to resets either did not see it or didn't comprehend it and were early to the next check. The rain did help keep the dust down and some achievable averages made the ride enjoyable. Tight sections . were mixed with more open roads and trails which kept the riders varying from cruising to going WFO. After 15 minutes at gas, the riders were sent out at 12 mph. After running up a ridge. they were sent into a very tight creek bed wtih a few minor bottlenecks. This made most riders feel they were late and when they got out of the creek and on to a road many blitzed along without checking their watches and consequently burned a well-placed check a little ways down the road. Later in the second loop, riders went through a long tight section for over an hour without a check. This took the steam out of most riders. After this, it was .just a matter of hanging on through a couple of good' downhills to the finish. The HMC really did an excellent job of putting together the Cowbell this year. In an effort that will hopefully start a trend with the other enduro clubs in District 36. they mixed timekeeping sections with fast sections to test both riding ability and timekeeping ability. The use of resets and well-placed checks is another indication of a well run event. But the real proof of how well run this event was was the almost total lack of complaints from tne riders. This rider had none. I heard none, and the club received almost none unbelievable. The only thing missing was route sheets. Perhaps that will be added by other District 36 enduro clubs later this year. 8 -.me D be8Il pt\N&1 tbat suspensftm ~ lUId. sboo1al aN mare tm.poIrtimt tban supe!'-tUDed JDDtioIl's in modern DIiCItIJcltdIa. :BI!It.t.ar handling, DOt mare llm'8epi s. is tbe 88m'8t tiD Winning.
