Johnston stayed tight against Nelson
until lap five when Johnston overshot a

sending him into an earth shaking

moved into third.
The second moto started with
Nelson taking the lead. Henry
Armendariz and Benincasa followed
in close pursuit. By the end of the first
lap, Chapman had moved up after
suffering from a bad start to overtake
Benincasa for third. Johnston was also
running hard as he held OD to fifth
spot behind BeniDC0S3. By lap eight,
Chapman set his sights on Nelson, but
was unable to take the lead. Nelson
finished first, Chapman second and
Armendariz third. The next CMC race

son out with a new track layout which
proved very good. Although atten·
dance was low, the action was first
rate.
The 125cc Junior class got off the
line with Shawn Broderick (Suz)
pulling an early lead. Ken Bookout
and John Seffing were both hot on
Broderick's tail hoping to pass him
by. This three-man battle lasted for
five laps until Bookout overtook
Broderick for the lead. Sdfing, also
wanting to better his position, moved
into hot pursuit of Broderick and soon
took over second position. These
positions remained the same for the
last two laps of the race with Bookout
finishing first and Seffing and
Broderick taking second and third.
The second moto started much as
the first with Broderick pulling the
lead over Lionel Delaware and Billy
Kincaid. Delaware pushed hard and
managed to overtake Broderick for the
lead. Seffing was soon moving through
the pack and in hot pursuit of
Kincaid. By lap four, Seffing's hard
charge had p.id off as he moved by
Kincaid for third. Lap five brought
some hard luck to Broderick as he
slipped into fourth place with Bookout
and Scffmg taking over second and
third. Bookout rode hard trying to
catch Delaware, but just couldn't
repeat his first moto win.

opener
By Bill Spencer
SONOMA, CA, OCT. 26
Dave Wood hadn't done too weD
the night prior to the Golden
State Raceway Winter Series
opener at the San Diego Supercross, but his troops loaded up and returned him to more familiar terrain in
northern California and he rode his
pcp Yamaha/Hi-Point Racing/MotoX' Fox·backed machine to the 250cc
Expert win over Dave Coupe and
Jerome Heiberger. Danny "Magoo"
Chandler easily handled the 125cc
Expert class over an inspired Ricky
Ryan, who at 14 has all the talents of a
super star, while Jim Inglebright
fought close Open Expert competition
to win over Brian Jodry and AUen
Berluti in a full day of great racing on
the unused Trans·USA track that was
very well prepared, but stilI a little
dusty.
Danny Chandler and the Pro-Trac
RCI25 Honda had little trouble handling the 125cc Expert class, leading off
the first moto and outdistancing the
pack with ease.
Chris Ladd led out the second moto,
but it was 14-year·old Ricky Ryan who
warranted the most attention. In both
motos, the former Mini whiz kid kept
the. gas on and showed a lot of mettle
for his age.
Ryan was running a strong second
in the fust moto and fell in an offcamber tum, but managed an easy
pickup and lost only one spot to Scott
Rebuck on the RM Suzuki. In the
second moto Ryan kept up second
place throughout with Rebuck having
troubles and giving third to Steve
Richards.
Another very hotly contested 125cc
Jqnior class saw Paul Duchscher the
winner with a 2-1 dfort on his
Yamaha and bad luck beginning for
Berkeley White on the Cycle West
.Suzuki. White easily outdistanced the
crew, winning the fint moto and was
leading the second in a good dice with
Duchscher when the shifter apparently
came undone, leaving him in second
gear and out of the contest on the very
fast track.
Brian Magee filled the second place
void and combined with a fust round
fourth, was second overall. Cory Canta·
loupi held third with a pair of threes,
Jon Nauman took fourth at 7-5 and
Jim Rolewicz was fifth with a 6-10
after having led some portions.
Dave Coupe had the hoIeshot over
Dave Wood and some 50 other 250cc
Experts in one of the better Semi-Pro
shows of the year. Coupe, not
mounted on a Maico, had shown the
troops how good a 125cc rider he was
earlier in the year winning one round
of a Pro Regional at Marysville. In
moto one, he just outdistanced the pack
with Wood second and a far away
pack led by Allen Berluti, D-56 Blue
Phlte points leader. Jerome Heiberger
'. made a great come-from-behind effort
after 'crashing in the first comer,
finishing sixth behind Randy Pockrandt
and Eric McKenna. Heiberger and his
Champion MX Can-Am suffered when
the pipe came adrift and then off
causing some wild running around
between motos.
Wood was long gone in the second
moto taking the pcp Yamaha to the
front and "adios-"ing the group. Iron
man McKenna was hot on the charge
until the head gasket gave up, leaving
Heiberger second place with ease.
Wood took the overall with a 2-1,
Coupe a very fine second at 1-5 and
Heiberger third with a 6-2.

Anderson aces
Oregon State MX
Championship
By Suanne Ught
ROSEBURG, OR, OCT. 25-26
Mother Nature was not cooperative for the Oregon State Motocross Championship held at
Clarks Branch as the track turned into a river and mud into muck. A
fine Amateur program was held
Saturday (wouldn't the Pros have
loved to ridden it then!).
The 125cc Pros got the program
rolling bright and early Sunday morning and Jimmy Anderson (Vancouver
Yam/Yam) took immediate possession
of a spot that would be his many times
today. Mike McCormick (RW Racing/
Yam) was second while Steve Pless
(Mug), Rob Watilo (RW Racing/Yam),
Stacy Thornton (Kaw), Rod Keller
(Suz) and Steve Corcoran (Yam) gave
chase. Riden soon spread out; Anderson was all alone while McCormick
and Pless held off a radical riding Corcoran who worked past many riders.
Jim Wiant (Yam of Springfield/Yam)
moved into sixth as Keller was displaced. At the flag, Anderson took the
win while McConnicIt, Corcoran, Pa,
Thornton, Wiant and Keller were in
tight fonnation distant to Anderson.
A rain-plagued second moto had
Anderson again take the lead, but
"Scary" Cary Lund (Yam) slammed
the door on Jimmy Anderson and pulled
away, surpnsing the Washington speed.
ster. McCormick settled into third as a
battle for fourth formed with Wiant,
Watilo and Corcoran. By this time, it
was raining like only in the movies and
Lund had stretched out a few seconds
on a smooth National rider, Anderson.
Finishing third was McCormick while
Wiant closed in but to no avail for
fourth. Corcoran was fifth, Watilo
sixth and Pless taking the final money
spot in seventh.
The 250cc Pro race was another
Anderson benefit as he pulled away
from the pack with Craig Prauss (Coos
Bay/Kaw) and Kevin Jansen (Yam) try·
ing in vain to keep Anderson in sight.
Steve Williams (Yam support/Yam)
was in fourth, a spot he eventually
carried to the flag as did Anderson,
Prauss and Jansen.
Second time out, Anderson (who
else?) walked away from his other
"victims" as Jansen, Prauss, Williams,
Gary Rost (Yam) and Dave Riemer
(Hon) trailed. Anderson led flawlessly
taking the win in the soup or "slew"
while Jansen and Williams took second
and third.
Larry Hooper (Wbeelsmith/Mai)
showed excellent style leading the
Open PrO/i over Craig Prauss (Kaw),
Rod Keller (Yam), California's Rod
Nordstrom (Yam) and Kent Reynolds
(Kaw). Hooper had no one to race
with, it seemed lilte, as he romped to a
first moto win over Keller and Nordstrom. Craig Prauss went for a DNF
disappointing one of Oregon's best.
Moto two had Hooper again take
command, only to lose it by the
halfway point to a pond that had
formed in his airbox. The lead then
was inherited by Nordstrom followed
by Keller. Nordstrom took the win in
the DNF-plagued moto for the overall
as well.
Saturday action had Rod Huffman
(Suz) go for a triple moto blit2, but this
was in the 250cc Intermediate class.
Donnie Church (Yam) of California
won Mini Intermediate honors over
locals Terry Davis (Suz) and Greg
Holmberg, also Suzuki-mounted. Loch
Names (Yam) of Eugene took his 1-2·1
moto scores to a fint overall in 125cc
Intermediate action while second went
to Kent Egli (Yam) of Roseburg, much
to the delight of local fans.
