M'"er makes off
with Old Timers
MX
By Bob Alloy
VALENCIA. CA, OCT. 12
Forty·two Old Timers raced at
the International track at the
Dunes to make it one of the best
turnouts of the year. A nice gusty
wind and some new twists of the track
added to tbe excitement of the day.
Ron Miller. a Master from Bakersfield, got things going in high momen·
tum. He not only wrapped up moto
one but did likewise for moto two.
Coming in second in both motos was
Marv Olsona nd Chuck Woody was in
with the third place honors.
Expen Ray Sanchez, while not looking so great in the beginning, knew
how to finish and that is right there in
first place in moto one. Looking good
and almost a sure winner was Dick
Frampton. Somehow on the seventh
lap, Dick lost this good standing but
did place a great second. Blasting in
with that third place win was Dan
Sanchez. Dick Mosley came in fourth.
The second moto was Dan Sanchez's
cue to come on in with force, and a
first place win was the result. Ray
Sanchez came in with the number two
spot. Third was Frampton. who did a
lot of fast riding to compensate for a
bad stan. Lou Sorenson wrapped up
fourth place.
The Amateur division was really
moving with a contest betw~n Lowell
Smith, Don Hobson and Hal Grady.
Smith began the action with a great
holeshot. Then the lead was taken over
by Hobson. The next leading
performer was Grady, who then held
the lead for th~ more laps. But in the
end, it was Smith with first place.
Grady followed Smith in with his
second place win. Placing third was
Larry Smith and following Larry it
was Bob Anderson and his four-stroke
Yamaha. It was on the second moto
that Larry Smith shot out into the lead
and just kept on going faster than
anything out there to win first. Lowell
Smith came in with a second place
win. Anderson took a nice line in for a
third place win. Following Anderson
wasJim Cooke with a fourth.
It was quite a contest betw~n
Novices Curt Wyatt and Connie Holt
in the first moto. Wyatt had the lead
on Holt for seven laps but Holt. who
was right there on Wyatt's fender,
slipped by to win that prized place
with Wyatt taking second. Jim Gates
came in with a third and Bob Alloy
lOCked onto founh. In the second
moto Wyatt got the holeshot and the
first place win, too. Gates placed a
good second, Holt came in with third
place and Dal Calais took a founh.

NMAlSuzukl fall
series closes at
Saddleback
By Tom Corley
ORANGE, CA, OCT. 12
The grand finale of the 1980 National Motosports Association Suzuki Fall Nationals took place at
Saddleback Park. A- faithful
crowd of fast minicycle and full scaled
motocross racers traveled all around
SoCal to get involved as the NMA
took the riders to some of the finer
tracks in the area. Naturally the parti.
cipants were out to have a good time
and also to win the huge trophies. But
the real incentive for coming out was
the chance to win one of five new
Suzukis. The bikes were awarded by a
drawing that they had at the end of
today's event and the more times one
entered a race the better chance one
had of winning.
The fLlm crews were out Tor the race
and their lenses were focused on Scott
Brown and Mouse McCoy. Dan Skahill
and others were putting together a
film for U.S. Suzuki and also for CBS.
Their cameras were on the right
people and Brown had a fantastic day,
taking his Suzuki to two wins. In the
83cc Stock Intermediate 9·11 race he
smoked everyone in the ,first moto but
Frankie Brundage had a long shot lead
in the final race. Overall it was Brown,
Brundage, Mike Healey and Eddie
Hicks. Brown took another win in the
Junior Cycle Modified 9·11 Intermediate race. Scott took two clean wins
which gave him the best overall trophy
in front of Shaun Kalos, Mouse McCoy
and Shane Trittler.
Troy Blake from Lav~n, AZ. will
be one of the favorites for next year's
NMA Grand National Championships
at Ponca City, OK. Blake won six out
of six motos and took first in the 83cc
Stock Expert 12 + race, 83cc Modified
Expert 12 + class and also the 105cc
event. His main competitor, Sam
Storer, took a mean spill in the Stock
race and was hit by several riders.
Storer had to be taken to the hospital
and his mother told me that he had a
bad shoulder. We do hope that he gets
better quickly.
The Jast time that the NMA had a
race on this Saddleback back track,
Louie Franco fell on his mini and got
hurt far worse than Storer did today.
Franco came back for another go at it
but this time he was mounted on a
Yamaha 125. Franco took two fine
wins in the 1%5cc Stock Intermediate
race and also the 125cc Modified class.
In the Stock race his competitors were
Vince McMahon and John Hemme
and in the Modified event Vince
McMahon was behind him again and
so was former mini star Taylor
Marcell. Louie has some big plans for
the future and he told us, "I want to
compete in the Nationals and catch up
with Kehoe'"
