Hansen in the next tum. Hansen made
one last dive at the last turn before
heading over three jumps to the finish,
but Holley held on for the win. Coffee
held off strong charges all mota long
for third, inches ahead of Rod Richardson and Todd Clark. .
Round two would be a different
story, however. Hansen again took the
holeshot, but this time he refused to
give Holley any passing room. For 12
laps, Holley stayed right on Hansen
just waiting for either a chance to
move up or a Hansen mistake, but
neither came about_ Holley tried
wrapping inside of Hansen in the
turns, but those efforts were to no avail
either. Time soon ran out, and
Hansen rolled across with the mota
and overall, with Holley second each
way. As for Coffee, he was caught in a
first-tum pile-up and wound up 10th,
sixth overall, behind third place
Clark, fourth man Richardson and then
Rob Peeples, who racked up a 6-4.
For 'the big bikes, the only rider who
had a shot at the overall in each round
was Bobby Kline. Kline, riding for
EFG-Radical Ron, Yamaha and KalGard, flat ran away with both of the
matos, and left only the runner-up
money to the other riders. Bob Shulz
was the rider to collect those earnings,
as he came from behind in each round
to finish second ahead of Tom Kelly,
Brian Vargas and Razz Reed, all of
them nearly a full lap behind Kline.
In the 125s, Johnny O/Mara came
up with the overall in the biggest of the
Pro classes. In round'one' O'Mara
grabbed the holeshot on his EFG
Racing/Mugen USA machine, with
Chris Heisser putting pressure on from
behind. Taking his Mota-X Fox watercooled Honda to its limits, Heisser
tried in vain to overtake O'Mara. Every
attempt he made was shut off quickly
by O'Mara, and the checkers came out
to put an end to the chase. A.J.. Whiting
came from the pack to run third by
mota's end, while brother Matt
Whiting trailed in fifth behind Kevin
Steele.
Mota two was another O'Mara win,
but again· he had someone right on his
tail the whole way. A.J. Whiting was
the runner-up for the distance this
time, and he too could make no move
to ge.t around the Mugen. Heisser in
the meantime was trying to work up
from third, but he could not get up the
steam to catch the front runners, and
late in the moto, he went down in the
sand, and by the time he remounted
and got the Honda running again, he
fell back to fourth. When the checkers
flew, O'Mara and Whiting went across
1-2, while Steele grabbed third ahead
of Heisser and John Langhammer. In
the overalls, the top five were O'Mara,
A.J. Whiting, Heisser, Steele and
Langhammer, with Matt Whiting
sixth after dropping to seventh in the
second mota.
