OCT. 19 The Wheelies Motorcycle Club of Hot Springs, hosted a good group of riders at their second climb Of the year. Riders from six states showed up to try the hill. One Lee "l.:ill~e Man" Myers and hIS wIfe, was firushmg a two·week trip that added two more states to his hillc1im bing list. Arkansas was the 22nd state in which he has climbed and his goal is to climb in e.;ery state that has a hillclimb. .For a while, it looked like Mike Polley wai going to add the crowning touc~ to .two successful climbs by beallng Will Alford. On his first run Polley piloted his 370 Bultaco to th~ top of the 5oo·foot hill in 11.96 seconds to put him almost a second ahead of Alford and the other riders. But on his second try. as" is his practice, Alford found the groove and took the win with an 11. 31-second ride. Henry Polley and his SC500 met Jim !erLouw's and Duffy Douglas' YZ465s ID the 500cc class. On his first ride Henry came out of the hole and hea.ded righ~ for a log that was laying ~eslde the hili around 30 feet, hilling It head on. He said the hole had him psyched out. Last June when the hole was cleaned up, a spring was opened and the recent rains had revived it. By the end of the day, the riders were standing in six inches of water when they left the line. The 500cc class ended the first run all messed up with even 370s in the run,:,ing. But things got straightened outm the second round. TerLouw had a fine ride that took 11.69 seconds to put him in first, but Jim Butler on a TT500 edged him out with an 11.63second ride. While talking at the bollom of the hill, TerLouw had con· gratulated Butler on the win when Polley came to the line. Butler said, "I haven't got it yet; he's hard to beat." Polley found out that he would not melt in the water and blasted (splashed) out of the hole and up the hill: He barely ~t off for the new ledge (bUIlt to slow down the riders at the top for safety) at 150 feet and went from last place to first in 11.34 seconds. o~ th~, Polley tops at Louisiana hillclimb By Diane Polley MANSFIELD, LA, OCT. 5 Mi.ke Polley was the undisputed star of the show at the Mansfield hillc1imb. On a tricky, twisting through-the-trees hill, he walked o~f with four firs~ and top time, riding hIS Bul up the hIli the second round in near perfect form. Polley missed all the bumps maae by tree roots. made the jog'at 180 feet with'a minimum of effort and went throug.h the lights at the top after only 10'.96 seconds. . ~olley followed. this performance by riding a .650. Tr.lUmph in the Open class. ThIS hili IS not made for big bikes and because of all the maneuvering that is required. they really have a hard time. Polley took first with a ride that took 16.18 secon.ds. That is a perfect example of the dIfficulty the big bikes have. To fini:sh up the day, Polley also took first 10 th.. Exhibition class on his Bultaco. He was not abl.. to find his first path and had to settle for a time of 11.50 seconds this time. Mike said that the only thing wrong with the day was that Will Alford was not there. Tom Anderson riding a TT500 in the 750cc class had the second fastest time of the day. His 11.37 gave him the win in the 750cc class. Results MINI 50: 1. Terry Hammack 48ft.; 2. Chorles Carder 48ft.; 3. J..,., Cohea 25ft. . MINI: 1. Jackie Anderson 180 It. 250 ENDURO: ,. OCT. 11 It was "Welcome Home Terry and Mike Night" at Ross Downs tonight as our two National heroes returned home from the rigon of the Winston Pro circuit. Terry Poovey competed in the short track events. but Mike Kidd was still suffering from the "bug" that sidelined him at Ascot and was just too weak to mount his machine. 'f!1ough the season is winding aown at Ross Downs, quite a few racers hit the stadium MX track. I>,onnie Strain out of Yamaha West took his YZ80 from green to checker in the Youth Mini MX class. The only competition the Ft. Worth native had was from Shawn Brassfield on his KXSO. The 125cc Novice class was combined with Ross Downs' newest class. the Over 30 group. What looked to be an excellent contest turned into something else as the four leaders crash· ed together on the fint lap of the main. By t~e time they got themselves sorted out, the parade bad passed them by. Robbie Hauk on his Da1Ias Suzuki 125 turned in a fine ride for the win. The Open Sportsman MX class was combined with the Open Expert as only one Pro made it to the line. But that Pro. David Walker. showed why he's in it for the cash as he made his Arlington Honda 125 to the overall .win. The big surprise of the night was Greg Harrison on a Honda thumper sponsored by Motor Cycle Specialties and Remington Enterprises. Harrison in his first MX appearance at R~ Downs.. came in a highly competitive second 10 the Amateur side. He said it was a way to celebrate his last week as a bachelorl . Even though Poovey and Kidd were scheduled to ride in the short track events, cool weather and an AMA point race in Oklahoma City kept the round trackers to a minimum. The only real racing was found in the two 250cc classes. The 250cc Sportsman class saw Mike George on his Knowles Yamaha racer have all he could do to take the checker from Craig Louis and his Bultaco. Terry Poovey easily handled the few Experts who came to compete against ·the National number holder. Poovey aboard his CR250-based Dallas Honda put on a real show of talent and power as he almost flew around the quanermile oval. The "Pooh-Bear" also took the win in the Trophy Dash.
