Hunt got the holeshOl with Durelle
on his tail for the first lap. England
had the crowd on its feet. though,. as
he passed third-place rider Bull Hayne
by lap two. Durelle challenged Hunt
for first on the founh lap as the two
left England and Earl Barnett to battle
for third with England dropping out
on lap five. The finish of the IO-lap
event was Hunt, Durelle and Barnett.
After Junior scratch heats were won
by Scott Adams, Jack Klein and Gary
McDonald, regular heats went to
McDonald, Sarrr Tidwell and Jay
Beach. all Harley-mounted. The first
semi saw Beach win with McDonald on
his tail way out in front of Klein.
Second semi was led wire to wire by
Tidwell with a big lead at the finish
over Phillip Culver and Kent Jessen.
In the Junior main, it was Adams on
his Dennis Latimer-sponsored Harley
all the way, leaving the pack to fight it
out with Allen Rohr holding a brief
second at the start followed by Jay
Beach and Kent Jessen. Beach passed
Rohr on lap two and started closing
the gap on Adams while Jessen battled
with Tidwell to hold third.
•
Meanwhile back in the pack. Culver
picked them off one at a time. On lap
seven, Adams was way out in front followed by Tidwell and Culver wheel to
wheel, Jessen, Jack Klein and Rhor.
Culver slipped back slightly at the
white nag lap only to rally in tum four
and zap Tidwell at the line for second.
First Expert heat was all Oklahoma
with Phil McDonald doing the honors
over Bret Braddy and Ronnie Jones.
Second Expert heat went to Peter
Hook, Russell Gourley and Andy
West, setting the stage for the main.
Braddy leaped out in front at the
stan leaving McDonald. Gourley and
Jones to sort things out. However. by
lap three they started closing in and
things began to get crowded up front.
A large gap separated them and the
next group consisting of Gourley,
Peter
Hook
and
Bill
Brown.
McDonald made his bid on lap eight
and set sail ahead of Braddy and at the
finish, it was McDonald, Braddy,
Jones, Gourley, Hook, Brown, West.
Promoter Jim Evans tells us that a
double National weekend is set for
Oklahoma - short track on May 16
and half-mile on May 17.

Black "Triumphs"
at Ross Downs
By Michael S. Lussem
COLLEYVILLE, TX, OCT. 4
After a dry spell reminiscent of
our Texas weather conditions
earlier this summer, Alan Black
aboard his Bob Bagswell-sponsored Triumph 750 put it to the best of
tOe Ross Downs short trackers to win
the weekly Trophy Dash. Black, who is
always in the hunt, dazzled the crowd
with the awesome power of his
l;"riumph and his ability to keep it
under a semblence of control on the
tight quarter-mile oval.
Black was pushed hard by Steve
Gulledge and his Ray-Sue Racing/
Dallas Yamaha 250, but the determined Black would not be denied. As
flames shot from his twin's pipes,
Black crossed the finish line a scant
wheel ahead of Gulledge to take the
win.
In other intermission action, Gene
Goodier, in his first outing at Ross
Downs, took his D &: S Cycle Yamaha
YZ to the win in the MX "Dash for
Cash," Goodier had little difficulty
with the rest of the field with the
exception of John Rubin aboard his
Suzuki 400cc four-stroke enduro.
Rubin, though, just couldn't keep up
with the full race machine of Goodier.
The finals of the Youth Mini MX
class saw D.L. Wood of Ft. Worth take
his YZSO to the class win. Eddie
Martinez (Yam) and Brett Stuart on
his D/FW Honda just couldn't catch
Wood. The real surprise of the race
was Ronnie Camp on a Corsicana
Honada who had spilled on the third
lap falling back to ninth place. By the
end of the race, Camp had moved up
to fourth and was with in striking
distance of the leaders.
The 125cc MX class almost saw a
three-way tie for first as the positions
of Ed Cook (Suz), Charlie Orr (Yam)
and Zeke Brock (Yam) varied from lap
to lap. Orr, wearing his short track
leathers, took his Anderson Paving
MXer to the lead a number of times,
but couldn't hold it long as Cook was
out to win, and win he didl
The short track events were in real
jeopardy of being cancelled as recent
rains in north Texas, which washed
out last week's races, had left the
quarter-mile track saturated and
slippery. With the help of fans and
racers who drove their vans and
pickups around the track for nearly an
hour the track was squeezed dry and
no-holds-barred racing was possible.
A limited number of small bikes
present made it necessary to combine
the Micro Mini, 80, and lOOcc events.
Although they were scored separately,
one would have thought that the
Micro Mini riders of Tim Kay on his
Motorcycle Specialties International
Suzuki and Greg Teague (Suz) were
supposed to race the bigger bikesl The
little guys put on the only real race in
the combined class.
The 250cc Sportsman race looked to
be a real contest as Greg Harrison on
his Remington Enterprises Honda took
a quick lead, but motor trouble on the
fourth lap sidelined the familiar
winner and Mike George on his
Knowles Yamaha made it to the
winner's circle for the first time this
year.
Harrison had better luck in the
Open Class as he took his Phil Jurysponsored Honda 500 thumper to the
class win over Alan Black's Triumph
750.
After four starts, official flagger
Eddie McCoy finally got the 250cc
Experts off the line together. From the
green to the checkers, it was Steve
Gulledge and his Dallas Yamaha/Gary
DeJorge/Ray-Sue Racing 250 all the
way. Self-sponsored Mark Neimi
(Yam) was close for a couple of laps,
but Gulledge seemed to have the edge
on power this week.
