evada-Oregon-Weshlngton-ldeho-UtBh> Wiggins wins four in Marin ~ By Mel White MARSHALL, CA, OCT. 5 0') ...-4 It took a lot of work, but the l-< Ranch properlY into a fine place to ride. By plowing and discing and watering repeatedly over many days, that which had been dry and hard became soft and reponsive. And surely there were no complaints about dust. The MCMA is going 10 seed it and race on it again privately, but today they ran as an AMA District 36-sanc· tioned MX event. Riders in the local area and those living farlher north along the coast always welcome a closerto-home alternative, and the MCMA staged an event that sacrificed nothing except the long hours of driving neces· sary to reach the inland valley tracks: Marin County Motorcycle Assoa) ciation transformed the motoIN cross track on their Gambonini Q,) ..c .8 U D 24 The 125cc and Open Experls shared the track from a staggered starl. the little ones going out first. It was newly. turned Experl Cris Ladd who led his fellow 125s through the starling turns both times. In the first molO, Ladd held onlO his lead position until the chain on his PRE Suzuki derailed resulting in a DNF. Ken Pederson was there on a water·cooled Honda to take over the front spot. Pederson made that unique machine look mighty good until he came around in' fourlh place behind the rather ordinary looking Yamahas of Pete Langley and Jeff Nichols as well as Dean Wiggins on an Open class Maico. Wiggins had holeshot the Open bike pOrlion of the race with George McNamara (Yam) in second place, had closed up the space between the starts and was fast infiltrating the 125cc ranks. By moto's end. only Langley retained parl of his head starl, taking the checkered nag first. Wiggins was next, beginning his first-place sweep of his four motos. Nichols and McNamara took seconds in their respective divisions. Pederson was the third 125. In the second moto. Ladd crashed away his holeshot during the first lap, but remounted 10 finish the race. Langley led for the rest of the 15·lap race. Nichols was again in for second with Willie Miller (Han) third. In the Open division, an early. turned scramble gave the lead momentarily to McNamara but Wiggins soon reasserted himself. McNamara repea ted his second· place finish followed by Alan Kondash on a KTM. The 125cc Juniors rode two very inconsistent molOS, the only exception being Colin Macdonald (Petaluma Ya· maha) who scored third both times out. Richard Wilson (Kaw) holeshot molO one followed by Berkeley White (Suz). Midway, White traded with Wil· son for first place and everything stayed pretty much the same after that. Wiley Craig (Suz) had the holeshot in the second molO followed by CUrl Carlosso (Yam). White crashed 10 a distant last place and used the long moto to catch· up and nab a fourlh only a few yards before the finish line. Meanwhile, Carlosso got in front of Craig to finish first and claim first overall. Nick Bishop (Mai) led the first moto of the 250cc Juniors with Berkeley White and Mike Lot ten (Mai) in hot pursuit until Bishop missed ~ars on the uphill and White and Lotten zipped past to finish the moto ahead. . In the second molO, White got in front at the very beginning and stayed there to take the checkers first again. Eric Conrad (Yam) fell in the first molO. but in moto two, he stayed in second place the whole way making sure that White earned his double wins. Lotten was a hot third, claiming second overall, as Jerry Cabral (Suz) edged past Wiley Craig (Suz) at the finish line for third overall. Bishop had 10 wait for the Open Junior race to win his trophy. Dean Wiggins smoked the 250cc Experts. In the first moto, he developed a comforlable 20·second lead during the first half of the race and then cruised out there until the finish. Meanwhile, Jim Zach (Yam) and Pete Langley (Yam) battled for second place. Zack took it. In the second moto. George McNamara kept Wiggins in sight and on the gas, thus Wiggins improved his lap times by about five seconds each over his first molO times. McNamara finished in second, Langley again third. The Minis had a good turnout, field· ing 15 80cc bikes. Eric Liddell took his Yamaha to the finish line first both times to score an indisputable first overall as a Junior rider. Tim Baxter (Yam) and Kelly Parsons (Suz) shared the first·place scores in the Novice division while David Johnson (Yam) nabbed one each of the seconds and thirds. Don Church, riding both an 80 and lOOcc Yamaha agreed to race his 100 with the Vets and be scored against the Novices. On the line, the Vets on 250s and Open bikes seemed to tower over the little kid on the 100. but when the numbers were added uf' Church had bested the Novices overal , which pleased him just fine. but perha(l5 not the Vets. Hendenaces SIRMX By Sue Sykes KENT, WA, OCT. 5 The October four-race MX series staned with some super action at SIR. Being back on the "On Any Sunday" schedule and the longer day track was a welcome change. New Amateur racers appear and it is nice to know our sport is alive and well. The fast action this day was in the 125cc Pro dicing. Scott Henden, on his Number One Cycle Yamaha, took command and the win. Scott makeS it look easy from the sidelines, but the competition was right behind to add some interest. Tim Kirk put his Bellevue Suzuki over for a 2-3 combi· nation then Tom Moen collected third overall with a 5·2 on his fast machine. The dramatic change at SIR this winter is the open, longer practice from 9 a.m. to 10:45. All seem to like it plus it's a nice way to get in shape for the Western Challenge Championshi(l5 on November I and 2 at SIR. Results PEE WEE JR: 1. Corey Halterman IYaml; 2. Gary Ekman ISuz): 3. Diondouses dust-o-cross By Greg "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, OCT. 5 Fred Dion brought B.O.S.S. MX back to Prairie City OHV Park and doused the dust with numerous truckfuls of water. There were a few delays in the program due to the watering, but as the dust actually decreased by day's end, no one could find a reason to complain.. The day's races were also run on an "afternoon" schedule where Novices go in the morning and Amateurs and Experts compete in the afternoon. This is more appealing to spectators so maybe more people will come to the races to watch. . Danny "Magoo" Chandler rode a borrowed Mugen 125cc water-crosser in the 125cc Expert class, but it wasn't enough 10 beat George Holland's extra·trick, extra·fast Suzuki RM. Holland hoJeshot the first moto as Magoo moved from about 10th place after turn one. Holland put a big lead on the pack and it took a few laps for Magoo to move into second. Once there, he started gaining, but his Mu~n suffered from improper jetting and started to sputter badly. Magoo closed in but Holland's power advantage made it next to impossible (nothing is "impossible" when Magoo's on the track) to pass. At the checkered, it was Holfand and Magoo, one-two, followed by Mark Hearn, Chuck Askland and Ken McKennzie. Moto two was almost a dynamite battle, but after Magoo passed Holland on the first lap for the lead, the Mugen rider decided to "have a seat" in a turn. He remounted and moved up on Holland only to find another corner couch to plant his posterior upon. Well, Holland won and rook the overall. Magoo remounted once again and finished second for the same overall. Scott Rebuck was third with Askland fourth for third overall. Ricky Ryan holeshot the first 250cc Expert moto. Jerome Heiber~r moved up from sixth to third in no time with Randy Losh second. Losh stalled in a right-hand, off-camber and fell in between Dave Wood and BrianJodry. Mark Zeissler pushed his Honda out in front of Heiberger, but fell as Troy Deherrera passed him. Heiberger remounted his Can·Am and soon passed Deherrera's Yamaha for second. In the same big, off-camber, righthand puff berm that Losh stalled in, Heiberger put the whammy on Zeissler to ace the lead. Heiberger, who really makes that "Canned·Ham" work exceptionally well, won as Zeissle.r came in second. Losh put his Euro-Cycles Maico into third at the checkered as Deherrera held off Wood (whose front tire was nat) for fourth. Wood holeshot the second moto on his Yamaha as Jodry moved his RM into second followed by Heiberger. Jerome passed Jodry for second as Wood pulled away out front. Heiberger shot by Wood later, though, and won both the moto and overall. Wood's 5-2 gave him the runner-up placing. Jodry holeshot the first Open Expert. moto on his Suzuki with Bob Shafer's Maico and Danny Turner on another Suzuki in behind. Jodry pulled a small lead as Turner looked for a line around Shafer. After a few attempts, Turner found the way and immediately took off after Jodry. Turner closed in on Jodry and tried to stuff a wheel underneath him on the last lap, but Jodry held him off to the checkered. Randy Pockrandt moved his Maico into third as Dean Shultz on a Suzuki and Wood finished out the top five_ Turner put his DuffyMltchell/Bonz up Racing RM400 out in front of Ed Marchinni and Wood in the second molO. Wood went down on the first lap as Jodry moved up to take over third. As Jodry took over second, Heiberger was cookin' on his "Canned-Ham" and cut up through the pack from a poor start. Turner stayed out front unchallenged for the win while Jodry held off Heiberger for second and the same overall. Chapman, Ellis haul at Porterville MX By Bob Hill PORTERVILLE, CA, SEPT. 28 On a scale of one to 10, I'd have to give the Porterville MX track a nine. Although I've never seen a perfect race course, this new track is one of the best in the valley. Chuclr. Marks took top honors in the SOcc Junior class winning both motos, Tim Kincaid of Porterville was second with Darin McPherid~ of Alpaugh third. Richard Griffith of Fresno took the overall in the l00cc Junior class followed by Lou Henderson of Fresno. David Holmes of Lindsay was the big winner in the 125cc Juniors as he took two moto wins over 15 riders in this class. Ken Bookout of Visalia and Danny Warner of Tulare followed with second and third overall. Chip Chapman of Fresno smoked the 125cc Pro class over Mark Bledsoe of Taft· and Dan Hannah of Fresno. Jimmy Ellis did the same in the 250ce Pro run over Darren Oliver of Bakersfield and Jay Haroutynian of Fresno. Porterville's next MX is October 18; see you there.
