Most of the riders came out to race with the 250cc class, but the best action was in the 125cc Pro race where Mugen's Johnny O'Mara took a double moto win. In the first round. O'Mara ran away after Craig Gormley (Yam) crashed in the early laps, leaving a battle for second place between Gary Denton (Hon), Scott Manning (Yam) and Curt McCuistion (Kaw). Denton led the threesome for ~rallaps while Doug Dubach (Yam), Jerry Raymer (Yam) and Ron Turner (Suz) formed another trio in close formation. Turner pa~ Raymer on the second lap and then did the same to Dubach four laps later. Then he broke away and started to gain on McCuistion, but the Kawasaki rider had a race of his own on his mind and in one lap McCuistion passed both Manning and Denton to net second. Manning also managed to get by Denton and shortly Turner did the same. The remainder of the race saw a reheated battle between Manning and McCuistion, but. McCuistion held out to cross the ftnish line in second, about 10 seconds behind O'Mara. The second moto holeshot went to Gormley, who could only take a 10th in the first race after his crash. Denton pulled into a close second with O'Mara in third. O'Mara spent two laps foUowing Denton and then two more laps following Gormley before breaking into the lead. One lap later, McCuistion moved past Denton into third. Setting the top positions for the rest of the moto. Dubach rounded out the top five in the otherwise eventless remaining laps. At the finish it was O'Mara with another small but safe lead over a pack that had an incredible DNF rate, with less than half of the total entries making it to the checkered flag. Gormley came back in the 250cc class. He led the crowded charge to the fmt tum in both rounds and did nothing but pull away. Don Griewe (Hon) held on to a close second in the early laps of round one, but a flat tire soon took him out of the running put· ting Bob Kline (Yam) in second. But it was Juan Benavidez (C·A) who was coming on strong after a so-so start, putting his Can-Am into third by lap three. Then he started working on Kline and soon Benavidez moved into second. By that time, however, Gormley was long gone. In the meantime Turner was coming up from behind to start preuuring Kline for third_ They diced for most of the race until Turner finally mo~ up on the lIth lap. Robbie Brand (Kaw) also started to gain on Kline in the final laps, but was unable to get close enough to make a challenge before the checkers came out. Round two was more of the same. Gonnley jumped into the lead and t~en disappeared while Ed Arnet held on to the number two spot. Brand and Kline battled back and forth for third through the first quarter of the moto while Bob Marino (Yam) waited it out in fifth. Soon Brand began to fall back and Marino made his move. But by that time Benavidez had made up from his rotten start and was about to break into the top five. He spent some time dueling with Brand, then moved up to Marino and turned on the heat. On the 10th lap, Benavidez moved into fourth and started to catch Kline, but in the remaining five laps he couldn't quite do it. Gormley took the win convincingly and with a 2-4 score, Benavidez was second. Third place money went to Kline ove~ Arnet, Brand and Turner. Don Griewe has been overdue for a solid win in recent months, but he made up for it last Sunday, using an unfamiliar 465 Yamaha to wipe out the Open Pros. The race itself had to be the most boring one of the day, with Griewe jumping out in front of both motos and running away. Results PEE WEE: 1. Chrio Lowen Noml; 2. W.., Kloin lY_); 3. He pulled in a lap later to fix the arm, and proceeded to ride the last half of the race. but way behind the leaders. With Lewis out, Trittler and Ricard were just riding around to finish and take their class victories, but they still kept up a heated battle. When the checkers flew, Trittler had the Modified Junior Expert Overall. and Ricard the Stock number one trophy. Danny Lamb put in a respectable ride for an Intermediate against all of the speedsters, and came out of it with two moto victories and the overall win. Results PEE WEE: 1. Ronnie Oenafard (1ljI; 2. Curt Wyano By Tom Corley RIcard, Trfttler, Lamb land CRC nIght mlnlcross wins By Nanette Marie VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 26 In the next-to·the-Iast race of the California Racing Club's Friday Night Tri-Valley Suzuki Dealer's Summer Night Motocross Series, one of the largest turnouts at the revised minicycle coune of Indian Dunes was on hand to compete for the trophies and gift certificates to each class, and try to qualify for the San Diego Amateur Supercross Championships. In order to better prepare some of the smaller riden for what to expect on the floor of San Diego Stadium, a new jump was built onto the mini track, compliments of park manager Gary Lamb. While the majority of the competiton handled the obstacle in stride, it gave many riden a new look at jumps; ones that just drop off after the takeoff point, and have no smooth runout. Surpisingly, nobody crashed off of the jump the entire evening, but a couple of the Pee Wee motorcycles suffered cracked and/or broken frames after their two IO·lap motos. The fastest race of the evening was the Junior Cycle Stock Experts, Modified Experts, and Modified Intermediates, all combined. In the Stockers, Kyle Lewis jumped out to an early lead in the fint moto, and stretched it all the way to the checkers as runner-up Marty Ricard, on a very sano looking ltaljet PR 50 battled with Shane Trittler all of the way, stalling once while trying to pass the Modified Expert, who was on the way to winning his class. In the second round, Trittler and Ricard got off to another early battle, GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 24 "It held together and I took first overalll" said 250cc Intermediate racer DeVon Farley after having his share of bike problems. But as it all turned out Farley came through as the big winner against some stiff competition at Ascot Park. In the fiTSt 250cc Intermediate race Farley got out ahead and took control of the lead while Rick Johnson and Ron Olson had to ~ttle for the next two positions. By the end of the first moto Farley's Honda had wasted its ba~ gasket and this created a problem. DeVon tore into it and just barely got it fixed in time for the second molO. When the gate dropped in the final race Shawn Mahn proved to be the winning rider on a Can-Am. Mabn took a fair sixth place finish In the first moto and replied, "I came out to show these guys how to ride and it looks like it is turning the other way around." Well that may have been the ca~ in the first moto but Shawn got on the gas in the ~cond moto and aced out Farley and Johnson. Overall it was Farley, Johnson. Mahn and Kevin Brown. There were some other great Intermediate races as well. Some of the real hotshoes have moved out of the 125cc Intermediate pack and this is giving others a good crack at taking the top spots. Whoever could stay up became one of the winners in this evening's race. In the first molO Randy Ross took the win in front of Dan DeYoung and Mark Harpwood. In the second molO it was Randy Ross who had problems. Ross went down on the same corner that Chris Herma did earlier and couldn't get his Suzuki going. This hurt his score badly and he took a ninth. The riders who led everyone in this last race were Harpwood and Herma. On the official results the riders ended up in this order; Harpwood, DeYoung, Steve Bainter, and Ross.
