It didn't last long as Arnet was again on the gas and closed on Kline, keeping constant pressure to the wire. It wa,s a night of seconds for Arnet in the 500cc Pro class as well. Jannings took total control of moto one followed by Arnet, Kirk Sturgeon, Tolleson and Darren Oliver. It wasn't until the last lap that Arnet pTessed Jannings, taking an inside shot at the flag which gave Jannings the win by his front wheel. Jannings rode the second round uncontested. Arnet and Oliver both passed Toleson for second and third. Division I of the 125cc Juniors was won by Karim Tali with a 2·1 ride on his Wong Product Yamaha. The first moto win went to Bruce Bartels who held his Scotts of Montrose Honda well out in front of Tali and Diego Wong. Eddie Kennedy led the first lap of the second round until Wong and Tali diced their way by, bumping Kennedy back to third. Randy Bailey defended fourth from Ron Stewart the entire moto. Taking advantage of the back straight, Tali moved to Wong's side and jumped to the inside of the ess to take the lead. Once in front he opened up for a safe win. Results 500 PRo: 1. Morehead zaps Ascot HM finale By Maureen Lee Photo by Dan Mahony GARDENA, CA, OCT. 3 The final regular flat track fOT the year went out with a roar Friday night. One record was broken and there was lots of excitement on the starting line over who was going to start the races; the racers or starter Rich Houchins. Pit personnel, a couple of riders and even fans in the stands got involved verbally. Officials held firm and un· flappable - riders had been told at the riders' meeting that the starts would be slowed down, but the trouble erupted when the front line with frying clutches couldn't see the second ljne creeping like mad, and that was why the green light didn't blink - it wasn't Houchins balking. There was trouble with each division - one Novice had to be forcibly held back by the referee on the third line because he couldn't contain hir;nself and track security was notified they might be needed by officials, and it all got quite exciting. There were faults on both sides but ex' racer Houchins is too good a starter to lose and he took a lot of abuse; lots of unsportsmanlike conduct going on. We think some fmes might be in order. But on to the good stuff. In time trials, Hank Scott came out and knocked off Garth Brow's '78 one lap record of 21.99 with a 21.95. After giving the opposition a glimpse of what he was able to do with The Force flowing, Scott bowed out for the rest of the evening to await the National. The first Expert heat went to Gary Scott. It was one of those heats with starting problems, and after they finally got away Bubba Shobert fell off in the south tum and they got a restart. Shoben got off with one of the finest lock to lock tank slappers ever seen at Ascot; ouch, and he was out for the night. On the .restart Gary Scott led it start to finish, going first into tum one with Jeff Haney, Bill Crabbe, Scott Drake and John Wincewicl chasing. Drake went out with engine problems. Haney, as the laps progressed fell back after almost going head first over the handlehars one time, and Crabbe and Wincewicz really scrapped for second. with John finally getting it. The other heat was won by Brad Hunt after all hands did considerable fussing around on the starting line. Next came Steve Morehead, Don Brown and Ted Boody. Ted Davidson fell off in tum two; Scott Pearson worked hard and got up to third place behind Morehead, hut Steve wasn't to be caught and neither was Hunt. For the Expert semi the first rundown was John Burnett, Terry Poovey, Jeff Haney, Rob Crabbe and Scott Drake. Crabbe came up with mechanicals, and Poovey scooted by Burnett to take the lead and hold it. Haney, on his 500cc Honda, clung like a leech to his third over Drake on his Harley by going deeper into the comers ... it was a nice, damp tacky track with lots of moisture in the air, Morehead fled for tum one frrst in the main. (If you can imagine this for pressure, he'd lost his gear box in practice and turner Larry Jones managed to get it all fixed up again with help from people like Tex Peel 50 Steve could ride.) He wanted to thank them with a win, but hoo-boy was it a race. Brad Hurst was in second, then Gary Scott, John Wincewicl and Bill Crahbe. A couple of laps later, Crabbe was quite a way back and Scott Pearson had moved up to join the fun. WinceWiCl was the one to watch; he was all over Morehead, while Steve kept going fast and smooth. By about lap 13 they'd changed places at least 15 times. Hurst was by Gary Scott to hold onto the third place as Gary got hit on the foot by something causing him pain and a big bruise, Wincewicl clung to the lead for a lot of the remaining laps with Morehead close, and when John'S foot caught, Morehead skipped by, and took the well deserved win. Jeff McDaniel (Hon) and Danny Perkins (H·D) went at it in the fastest Junior heat. Derek Land won his heat nicely, and Sal Hoffman won the thrid one, as right behind him Steve Oort left the door open and Dan Atkinson went through it to take away Oort's transfer to the main. Oort got with it and went on to win the semi over Craig Scroggins and Eddie San Roman. Perkins led the main for quite a while as the others sorted out behind. At one point McDaniel, Hoffman and Scroggins went through the north turn literally three abreast. Land held second for a while too, but the rider to watch was McDaniel on the nimble smaller Honda. He just kept going deeper into tum three than Perkins, pul1ing up close and closer until he was able to get by and take the win. Kreg Hunt, a Novice from Oklahoma in his first time at Ascot did fine for himself by getting in second in his heat behind top rider Mike Hale, and went to take second in the main. They really had troubles getting the main started, but on the third attempt Chris Cannon got on out there and led it start to fmish. Mike Hale tried very hard to take second away from Hunt, but just couldn't do it, and Mike Montgomery came up througl1 the pack to a nice fourth. Results NOV MAIN: 1. Chris Cannon lVam); 2. TIME: 1:09.40 Harley Hall(s} at Corona By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, OCT. 3 The Intermediate classes had the best action at the weekly R.A.C.E. motocross last Friday, with two divisions of 125s showing up at Corona Raceway. In division one it was Harley Hall (Yarn) who took both motos while a major battle took place for second. In the first moto Steve Dye (Yam) had the spot for the first few laps over John Begin (Suz) and Gary Clark (Yam). Then Clark started to move up and soon he and Dye were battling it out only a few seconds behind leader Hall. It was on [he lap before the white flag came out that Clark finally made his move and passed Dye. Scott Broviak (Suz) also made a last minute move on Dye to nab third. Round two again saw Hall in the lead and Dye holding down second place in the early laps, this time with Broviak in close tow. In the late laps of the race Dye again ran into troubles and had to drop out of the moto, giving Broviak the number two spot. Third across the line was Larry Peacock (Yam), but third overall went to Clark with his 2·6 score. The second division of l25cc Intermediates had another double winner with Craig Seeley (Yam). His first moto start was poor, but he soon worked his way up to second behind Scott Marrs (Yam) and then put himself into the lead in the late laps. Brian Renshaw (Yam) was second ahead of Marrs and Scott Seeley (SUl). The final round was much easier for Craig, jumping into an early lead and staying there throughout the race. aside for two laps when Renshaw was on top. Renshaw was again second with Scott Seeley third and Jack SCOlt (Yam) fourth. Results MINI BEG: 1. KUrl Strand IKawl; 2. Glenn Tucker IYam); 3. Doug Rogalia IVaml. MINI BEG: 1. Rocket Randv (Yaml: 2.
