Stearns takes dusty Dusters win By Joyce May RED MOUNTAIN, CA, SEPT. 28 Chuck Stearns, a 250cc Expert, played a waiting game at the Dusters AMA D-37 hare scrambles, as he pushed hard behind 20.- leader Dan Smith. who finally made a mistake and allowed Stearns around him for the overall win. The Dusters M.C. located tbeir camp four miles east of Trona Road. The area has not been used for some time. The start was a long, uphill pull across the valley to the base of the mountains. It was a rough one for the smaller bikes, and as they hit the foothills, the climb became even stee~r. Halfway around the loop Smith (Open Ex) had established a narrow lead with Stearns nipping at his neels. Cliff Thomas, on his singing "C" machi~, was third. Kevin Hopkins, who had kept Thomas company last week, had done some "preventative maintenance" on his C machine, upon the insistence of his dad, and ended up seizing it solid after running a few bikes behind Thomas. Ken Upp (250cc) came through the second check in the fourth slot, followed by Ed Whisenant and Rick Schumaker, both on Open bikes. First and second Vets were next: Benny Padilla and Rich Jackson were having a good race, with C biker Russ Jenkins behind them, feeling his way through the dust. Rick Jones (Open) rounded Out the first 10. In the II th slot, Gary Charters led the Seniors on his C bike, with first 250cc Vet Jim Bringhurst eating his dust. In the 15th overall slot was the first 250cc Senior George Zuber. _--- - First Trailbike was piloted by Pete Andelman. Robert Smith had led the Trails to the bomb, but his bike blew up on the first hill. First and second gals were Diane Holeman and Lynette Zuber. The first Novice was Open rider Roger Eggers. On the trail were TV stars from That's Incredible, John McCown and Kookie III, doing their thing. Repre· sentatives from the AMA were out viewing the activity in preparation for a story they plan to do on the famous duo. Check three sat on a hill on tbe back section of the loop. The hill was the center of much controversy. That part of the course had been laid out by Duane Summers on his flying 80. The night before the race. the rocky hill was taken out by some con~ ~ bers of tbe sponsoring club, but the next morning another group from the club went out and put the section back in. The crew manning the hilltop check noticed that the Experts and Amateurs "bit the dust" on the hill much more often than did the Novices and Beginners. According to their report, it was quite a show. Off the first loop came Smith and Stearns, followed by Thomas, Upp and Schumaker. In tbe sixth slot was Hopkins, followed by Whisenant, Padilla and Jenkins. Charters was still holding down the first Senior slot while Bringhurst had the first 250cc Vet sPOt with Zuber still the first 250cc Senior. First Trailbike pilot Andelman had a strong lead, wbile Diane Holeman had taken a commanding lead over the gals. The Beginner/Trail Novice group were glad to see the cbeckered flag after just one ~5 mile loop, as it had been a rougb ride for most of them. Kurt Mann, aboard his 250 Yamaha, took the overall Beginner honors. Desert Riders hare scrambles in Mesquite. Enduro Expert from Ridgecrest David Janice, who was coming back from a serious injury, rode pie plate Beginner and fmisbed second. However, he gave bis second overall, first C bonors to the next fmisbers, as all he wanted to do was to start getting himself back into riding form. Second Beginner: first Open honors went to Trace Albrecht of the Viewfinders. Next across the Beginner finish was Maico pilot Davore Courtney (250cc), followed by a pie plater and another Maico rider. Robert Adams (Open). Mark Zela took first Beginner C honors for the second week in a row, followed by Husky·mounted Mitch Bulawski (Open). Another pie plater led the second C machine, piloted by David Wiggins. past the checkered. First Beginner Open Vet honors went to Bob Coycle on a Yamaha. Not far behind was the first Trail Novice bike ridden by Scott Colbert. First Trail Beginner honors went to Greg Rogers of the Desert Rats. Lori Hammel. on a 250 Husky. was first Beginner gal. Other Trails to finish were David Duke and John Powell. The second loop found Stearns with a front flat, but it stayed on the rim and gave him very little trouble. Smith overshot a tum in a sandwash and slid out, allowing Stearns to move ahead into the lead. However, a few miles from the finish, Stearns' tire came off the rim, slowing him down considerably, but he had built up enougb distance from the rest of the pack and was able to retain the lead past the checkered flag. Cliff Thomas piloted his C machine to a second overall finish, while Smith finished tbird. Former CRC desert ace Upp (250cc) was fourth overall followed by Whisenant, and Schumaker. First Vet Benny Padilla (Open) was in the next spot followed by second Vet, RichJackson (Open). Jackson finished a good race with his handlebar broken completely off on the throttle side. Senior ace Charters moved up into the top 10 followed by Rick Jones (Open) in the 10th slot. The next 10 riders were as follows: Jenkins (C Ex), Bringhurst (Vet 250cc), James Vincent (Open Ex), Ray Waters (first overall Amateur, and first C Amateur). Zuber (250cc Sr), Brett Howell (Open Ex), Tom Mattox (Open Ex), Bill Postel (C Ex), and Dave Wasden (250cc Am). First Novice honors went to 250 Husky-mounted Russ Kurisu of the Master Links. Diane Holeman earned the ladies win. Other gals to finish were Lynette Zuber and Debbie Hopkins. Taking advantage of the absence of his nemesis Jack Johnson, who along with Scot Harden were contesting the ISDT in France, Davis went relativefy unchallenged in the four-loop, 80mile, Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada-sanctioned event. Heavy rains in the area played havoc with the original course layout and the club bad little time to reroute the circuit. A killer hill frustrated most Novices, some Amateurs and a few Experts. Can-Am's Kevin Welch led the stan but bobbled as the course funnelled into a narrow sandwash allowing Davis and Anthony Pasqualotto (Mai) to squirt by. Welch was soon history with a broken dutch shaft. By the time Davis had taken tbe checkers only a bout 40 of tbe approximately 125 entries were still racing with just seven riders goin~ the full distance. Anthony Pasqualotlo kept Davis honest with a second overall, second Open Expert finish. Third overall was being hotlycontested by 125cc Suzuki-mounted Daryl Folks and Husky 250-thrower Chuck Rush. FolD prevailed as he smoldered the circuit and blasted up the horrible hill as if it were paved, enrotite to capturing the top 125cc honors and moving atop of the 125cc points table. Previous points leader Mike Welch (C-A) could not negotiate the steep indine with the broken hand he sustained in a separate accident at the Wells fountain jump, resulting in a DNF, while the other top 125cc contender Bennie Brown (Yam) encountered difficulties on the uphill that eventually dropped him to third 125cc Expert. Chuck Rush held it on to finish fourth overall, first 250cc Expert as' he was pursued all day by fifth overall, second 250cc Expert finisher Glenn Wischmeyer (Hus). Rush maintains a slim lead in the 250cc table over Chris Howard, who was ineligible to compete because he is a member of the sponsoring dub. . The surprise of the day was Sixth overall, first overall Novice and first Over ~O Novice finisher Mark Hardy (Yam). The last of the four lap finishers was Shaun Shirley (Yam) who logged seventh overall, first overall Amateur and first 250cc Amateur. Max Switzer (Mai) halted Casey Folks' (Hus) Over 50 Expen class win streak at fOUT with a 10th overall tally. Ron Timmons (Mai) captured the Over ~8 Expert Class laurels. • Results tHuol. 125 EX: 1.
