took the lead. Bentley got squirrelly
after Gravity Cavity and went down,
tweaking his wrist. David Bailey, on
Tom BenolIcin's factory Kawasaki (BenoIIcin was injured in the Red Bud round
in Michigan the week before) was
next. Honda's Ron Sun followed. Bentley put in a hard ride and closed on New
York speedster Tom Rice and LOPbacked Larry Wosick, who were in the
4·5slolS.
After 20 minutes of the SO-minute
moto had expired, Bentley took advantage of a low section and displaced
Sun for third. Guerra and Bailey were
way OUt front.
Then came the Iron Man. Gary
Pustelak looked to have his new Husky
sorted out and came from the back to
challenge. Pustelak took an outside
line on an uphill and stuffed Sun into
a downhill. Roger DeCoster was on the
sidelines making comments on Pustelak's fine choice of lines.
Guerra went in for the win with Bailey
a ways back. It came down to a third
place bailie between Pustelak. Sun
and Bentley. The trio allacked the
course three wide. and Pustelak held
on for the placing with Sun, who had
the flu the previous week, inching over
the line ahead of Bentley.
"I was saving a lillie for Bailey. but I
think he slowed the last few laps. I was
riding hard, though," said Guerra.
-"Right after I gOt tbe halfway flags.
my rear end went squirrelly. Boy, was
I gelling in some swappers. My rear
tire was flat," said Pustelak.
Bailey was bOlloming his Uni-Trak,
so he pUt on a stiffer spring for moto
two. This time Sun and Guerra shared
the holeshot, but within a few turns
Guerra was again le.ading. Wosick
plugged into second with Pustelak
tailing. Bailey, Sun and Keystone/
Dean's Cycle/KTM'sponsored Andy
Stacy were next.
. Pustelak made it look easy as he
passed Wosick while pulling away a
tear-off. Kippy Pierce was off the pace
but picked up speed and took sixth.
Guerra took his lead to the checkers
with Pustelak over Bailey in a tight
duel for second. That finish decided
which of the two would claim second
overall. Wosick was fourth followed by
Alan King on a reed valve-equipped
Maico. Pierce, Stacy and Husky support
rider Derek Wedding were next. "I
know one thing. This track is rough, as
.rough as it's ever been," said Guerra
after being awarded a silver tray for
his overall performance.
"This was Pustelak's type of track,"
said Bailey after the Iron Man edged
him for second overall. "Hang onl" •
