He took it right down ·to the wire as he got around Klall on the white flag lap to pick up the third to Hames' first and Cannon's second. It was Alumni night in the Open Money half mile with the return of Eddie Lawson, Craig Armstrong, Jay Lewis, Tom Heard and Shawn Leipold. It was a match between tbe rookies and the vets and the outcome proved to be very interesting. At the start it was Cannon with Lawson second, Hames third and Armstrong fourth. Lawson, who holds the half mile track record of 22.17. followed Cannon one more lap before he took control of things and showed the rest of the field the way home. Hames followed Lawson with his pass on Cannon and took over second but it was far from secure with Cannon almost riding double with him. Hale took advantage of ~Wincewicz's early demise to move up to fifth and then put a move on Armstrong which locked him into fourth. There was only one more pass before the race was over and it came on the white flag when Cannon powered by Hames to lock up second behind Lawson. Results TT MINI NOV: 1. Jason Bell (Vam!; 2. McGraw makes it look easy at SRA GP By Sue Senn CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. ~1 Rustan Yamaha rider Lynn McGraw won the Senior Open class with a 70 second lead over Husky-mounted Lars Larsson. Larsson had an unusually bad start and it took him eight laps to work his way up to second spot. Vern Heth took fourth overall. first 250cc and had an exceptionally good ride. Heth hung onto Larsson's tail and al the finish it was McGraw, 70 second later a batding trio of Larsson, Charlie Conway (KTM) and Heth (Yam). Amateur Gary Little took first 125cc and this guy is unbeatable. He always finishes with the big bikes. Barry Crawford took his Suzuki in for the overall in tbe mighty Mini class with a four minute lead over Tom Gamar and Keith Senn, both on Yamahas. Senn's machine stalled at the starl and it took him two laps to be back up with Dave Trager and Gamar. Trager went down, leaving a hot dice between Gamar and Senn, which lasted the entire race and wound up in that order. Trager recovered and claimed fourth. Jeff Frazier and Ray Arney claimed Novice honors with Travis Allison and G. Kindelberger claiming Beginner laurels. I ask riders and readers to please bear with me from this point on as my son Kevin Senn was seriously injured in this race, tbe 81-200cc. Jim Odel (Suz) is always a treat to watch and this race showed him at his best. By the founh lap, Senn, an Amateur who had started on the second wave, had worked his way up to third overall behind his SCORE partner. Expert Bill Holmes (Hus) who was closing on Odie. By the seventh lap, Holmes and Odie were settling in with a good dice and Senn had a I ~ minute lead over the next Amateur, Nov.l~2 Kevin Case. On the eighth lap, Senn got off the course into a rain rut which sent him down hard, breaking his left thigh. On the next lap, Holmes stopped and made sure his partner was okay before continuing his race. Odie took an easy win, Holmes was second and Torsten Courm (Hus) third. Case got a flat. finishing third Amateur behind Del Shamblin and Steve Crawford. Top Novice riders were Daun Young. Albert St. George and John Esposito. Beginners were Len Foster. Kevin Treymeyer and Mike Cooper. Craig Adams (KTM) won the Open class but Mark Asbury (Kaw) led into the ninth of the 14 laps. Asbury either laid it down or had problems because on the 10th lap Craig was opening his lead. Top Experts were Adams, Asbury and Lars Larsson (Hus). Top Amateurs were Mike Drown, Stephen Vin Curek and Charles Sanner. Robert Brauer, Harry Thornburg and Don Farley were top Novices while Daun Young, Shawn Devlin and Andre Butcher were top Beginners. Mike Sixbery (Yam), Mike Baker (Yam) and Craig Adams (KTM) finished in that order in the 250cc race andSixbery won with close to a two minute lead. Adams was giving Baker his money's wonh until his KTM picked up ribbon in his chain and wheel. an Adams specialty. Top Amateurs were Quinton Smith, Ron Laffranchi and Rich Kastmer. Top Novice riders were Rob Hall, J. Clinkinbeard, and Jeff Bare. Lee Patten, Dale Morse and Roger Thomas claimed top Beginners. • o 00 (j) .-I ENTRIES OPEN NOWI Dirtqersl! $1800 and two self addressed stamped legal size envelopes. classified races must· send photo copy of rider' classification - Dist. 37, AME, CRC, CMC. etc. • Starting position determined by postmark Post Entry $25.00 Free Overnight Camping Spectato rs $4.00 Gates Open 6 A.M.: Race at 8 Entries: DDMC, 2173 Crescent Ave., Montrose, CA 91020 213/249-6459 9 am - 9 pm Watered Course, Fast Traction 5ClDRise Valley CgcJePaRk SANCTIONED District 37 Points ~-------------------------ENTRY APPl..JCATION I I ~-"-~.. ----.=~-~-....I I I 1It-. _ I I -~I _ .. c~. • _ _• _ I c. c~ I ,_. .. __. __ I I ....- . - - - - - - ..-~------------I >----.---------I I ,.. . . __ . .
