Wayne Lanning Jesse Wessels .fought off the repeated challenges of his Open Senior opponents to claim the win at the 12th round of the Coors Midwest Motocross Champion· ship at Atwood. Wessels put his Maico into the lead of the first motp with Dan Hoover, Dave Emerick and Larry Chvatal in tow. Wessels and Hoover quickly pulled away from the rest to wage a battle that proved to be the closest of the day. During the last few. laps: they swapped the lead constantly, Hoover' putting his Yamaha ahead briet'1)! only to have Wessels fight back. On the last lap, Hoover cut inside of the Maico following a jump to bulldog by in a tight right·hander. Two turns later, Wessels pulled back along· side Hoover and the berms each fol· lowed converged into one exiting the corner. A crash seemed unavoidable, but the two bounced off each other with Wessels pulling out a slight lead to the flag. . Emerick jumped into the lead in the second moio ahead of Wessels and Hoover, setting a vicious pace. Wessels and Hoover matched it and they formed a very fast trio as they pulled away from fourth·place Chvatal. On the fourth lap, Wessels managed to squeeze by for the lead and rolled in two laps later with the win. Emerick maintained his runner·up position for second overall ahead of Hoover. A pair of seq:>Jtds for the day was good enough to lock up the CMMC 250cc Senior title for Tom Kuhl of Orleans, NB, with two rounds remaining. Dan Hoover placed first in each moto for the day's top money, however. Kuhl led the opening moto for one lap before relegating the lead to Hoove~. Kuhl clung to second ahead ofJennings' Kevin Wagoner. , Wagoner got t~e holeshot in moto number two with Hoover again lurking in second. Hoover took over on the sec· ond lap and left Wagoner to deal with Kuhl, who got by for second place by the fourth lap. They finished in those positi.ons - the same as the first moto. _ Atwood's own Brian Luedke found his way to a pair of moto wins in the 125cc juniors. He won the first moto wir to wire with a lead at the end of over half a minute. Kurt Ross moved up to second after a third-place start when Bart Weaver fell briefly near the end of the moto. Weaver quickly recovered to finish third. Pickering led at the start of the second moto with Luedke pushing him hard. Luedke finally made a move that struck on the fourth lap by diving beneath Pickering. Ross was now within striking distance of Pickering and scooted past in a slick off-camber when Pickering lost it momentarily. Weaver also got by the fallen Pickering and the second mota finishes for the top three were the same as the first moto. Annette Goeken took the holeshot in the Powder Puffs first 'd!oto and won 'it going away. Tammi Confer held off Marsha Ginther tlie whole race for second. Fourth-place Deb jones suffered a gruelmg crash when the throttle on her Suzuki struck wide open. She took a very hard shot on the back and was taken to the hospital for observation. Herndon, King, Morehead master Muskogee H-M' By Frank Harrison MUSKOGEE, OK, SEPT. 13 The old Muskogee State Fair.grounds have been around a long time, but even the local Okies • said they didn't know such a beautiful half-mile track existed in that part of the' state. Had jim Evans, the promoter, not raced there himself back in the '60s, it wO\lld probably still be unknown. Over 65 riders showe.d for this night before the Tulsa National with Iowa referee Bill Mathison at the helm and Steve Faraci doing the flags for the 15race program, all over by 10 p.m. The start of the first Expert heat saw Alabama's Lance jones go to the foul line. On the restart, Donald Edgins got the holeshot followed by Steve Morehead, Billy Labrie and ·Bill Brown. Morehead on his Horton Racing/KK Supply Harley quickly zapped Edgins, leaving Labrie to work on Edgins with his borrowed Gary Corpion/Freddie Beal Harley. As Morehead widened his lead, it took Labrie five laps to finally get by Edgins and start closing the gap on Morehead. However, it was too late and the finish was Morehead, Labrie and Edgins. Houston's Bubba Rush led wire to wire in the second Expert heat, but the battle was behind him -with David Sena second on the start followed by Bret Bra'ddy and Phil Darcy. As Rush stretched his lead, Sena and Braddy got zapped by Darcy on the third lap. Darcy started closing on Rush leaving Braddy to batde wi~h Phil McDonald after Sena slipped off the groove. Braddy and McDonald closed the gap on Rush and they were under a blanket at the finish - Rush, Braddy, McDonald. The first No-vice semi was led wire to wire by Mike' Harper on a Yamaha with Louie Van Hukelom on his CanAm second and jay Halpain third on his Yamaha.
