on a water pumper Cagiva looked to
be the one to do it after a holeshot and
a second in the first go ·round. but in
the second moto he came up with
problems and it was Fritl Schlegal
(SUl) and Rik Nielsen (Yam) left to do
battle. In the early going it was Nielsen
in second for a tie-breaker runner·up
spot. but the steady-riding Schegal
wore him down and took the second
spot by a comfortable margin at the
checkered flag.
The 250cc Pro class was a different
story. however. as Chris Chaffee
(Yam) took two blasting holes hots over
Elliott. and though he faded bacily in
the first moto. Chris stayed in a strong
second throughout the second go·round. The battle for runner·up spot
was a real wild one though, as Honda
rider Kirk Grissom and Robbie Nolin
(Yam) staged a second-moto-Iong
battle with Grissom doing the job off a
4-3 effort over
olin's 3-4. It was·
actually a three-way tie for second as
Yamaha·mounted Carlos Serrano was
fourth overall with a 2·5 finish!
Just as Elliott dominated the 125s
and 2505. so did Clint Hardick (SUl) in
the 500cc Pro class. It wasn't even
close in each moto as Hardick not only
had double holeshots, but led every
lap. Once again, however, the runnerup spot was decided by a rie·breaker
with Yamaha rider David Fisher- getting the nod over Dale Anderson (Mai).
New Pro Ryan Heller ran a strong
fourth in both motos and looked like
he just needs a little seasoning to be
among the front runners. A folded
front wheel sidelined co· favorite David
Gerig in the first moto, and he did not
run the second round. The win was
Hardick's third straight. as he had
taken the final of the Bosch Series at
Saddleback and had followed up with
another win the following week, also at
Saddleback.
