SEPT. 21 After a long five week layoff of desert racing, "C" bike aces Cliff Thomas and Kevin Hopkiris gave Open bike aces Bob Balentine 00 12 Red Mowibiln - ....._ CIty - S_cMlPl and Dan Smith a real run for their money. Smith finally outlasted and outran the group. taking the Shamrocks' overall honors. The event was a hare and hound sponsored by the Shamrocks. run basically on their Two·Day Qualifier course, with the first wave of riders leaving the start line at 8;25. almost a half hour after the scheduled start. The "bomb" itself was an invention created by Ron Hubbard, who. by profession. -develops lighting for airports and tall towers. Hubbard called this invention a "Senior Bomb." It was a st(obe light. po~ered by a portable generator. and could be seen 15 miles away in daylight. He said that there would be no way anY0'1e. including the Seniors. could possibly miss the bomb this race. It was so well received that other clubs have asked to use it at their events. Balentine made the trip from Gardnerville for the race and was feeling good as he headed off the start for the bomb. He couldn't believe what he saw. however. when he reached it ... two "C" bikes. wound out to the limit. with pilots Thomas and Hopkins laying low on their tanks. flying along in front of him. . Checker Greg Thomas was among the leaders to the bomb. but his racing for the day was short-lived as he destroyed his rear wheel. Fellow Checkers Bill Mattox and Darin Cartwright also ended their race in the first few miles, both bailing off extremely hard. Thomas had taken the lead on his Yamaha, but Hopkins was giving him no slack whatsoever. as he pushed his Yamaha-to the limit. KTM's Balentine was close behind in the third spot while Husky-mounted Smith held fourth. First 250cc was piloted by Chuck Stearns with another 250cc jockey. Mike Sixbery. in sixth. moving close in his dust. Next was first Vet. Bill SaJuman (250cc). It was Thomas and Hopkins in lhelead for most of the first loop. Hopkins crashed in the pits and had some bike repairs to accomplish before he could head out onto the second loop. bUI he still managed to pull out in the third spot behind Balentine. who had taken over the lead. and Thomas. For the Beginners and Novice Trails the end of the first rugged loop marked the end of the race. The official first Beginner was listed as Marl< Zola (C). Nen came Brian Brown (250cc), followed by Open riders Jaszarowski and Mike Logan. with C rider Pat Burroughs close behind. Fred Peacock on a C bike was next.' followed by David Stroh (Open). First Beginner Vet w'!s Clayton Loonsfool. First Trail was Novice Larry Berg. First Senior Beginner honors went to Wendell Rapp. Robert Shelton took first Open Vet honors. and the first gal was Donna Green. For Balentine the lead was short· lived. Five mile~ or so out onto the second loop he got a flat. He dropped out. giving the pilot spot back to Thomas. Meanwhile. Smith began his push. managing first to get around Hopkins. and then, finally. about halfway into the second loop he took Thomas. Sixbery had come out of the pits ahead of Stearns, while Park had moved ahead of altzman. Mark Zoller (250c,) had also moved up. as well as hard charger. Ken Upp (250cc). By seventh check the "riders had settled into their positions quite positively. The only rider still on the move up was Saluman. who had spent extra time in the pits. Heading out onto the second loop he had dropped back to 12th. With flat tires a primary problem on both loops. there were still a total of 230 finishers OUI of a field of about 300. Smjth led the roaring herd across the finish with wildmen Thomas and Hopkins not far behind. Sixbery. who had ridden one of his better races of the year. took fourth overall. first 250cc. with another 250cc machine piloted by Stearns, close behind. Stearns has picked up a new sponsor: Scott's Scotter of Melrose. Park (Open) was sixth overall. There was a time lapse of about five minutes before the next rider appeared. It was Ed Whisanant (Open). Following him were Upp. Vet Saltzman in the ninth slot. and Dave Hornbeck (Open). rounding out the top 10. and finishing as first Amateur. Diane Holman and Lori Farmer had a rough battle going the entire race. until Diane fouled a plug five miles from the finish. Needless to say, she was very unhappy about the incident. Lori took first honors. leaving the second spot to Diane. Results OPEN AM: Dave Ho
