Gary Scott wins Ascot Regional in 'record time when he discovered in the pits that his bike wouldn't shift. The crowd was up on its feet. Scott hadn't gone quite like this in a long time, he rode confidently up to tht; high groove and started flying out of the turns on them, at one point going between Labrie and the wall' at the start of the main straight in only a whisker of space. "I didn't really want. to do that," he grinne.;l 'afterwards to fans who were still try'ng to quiet their hearts. "But I thought, oh well, -I'll go for it, I knew there was just enough room," It was probably the, hardest work Cary's do",e in a long time, a night when he and the bike just got together and ran as one, and it earned him a nice lump of cash and trophy and the Western RegionaJ Championship when "those in the know" were saying, "it's a Goss night." The Juniors all got safely through their heats, Rich Arnaiz had' an easy win the first heat with Derek Land the second transfer, Danny Perkins and Jeff McDaniel carne out of the second heat, and Jeff Allison and Sal Hoffman the third. Fast Arlette Smith ·was third in that one, and when Jim Keener tried to pass her he fou nd himself going too quickly into turn one and ended up scattering hay in the sou'th turn and breaking the from axle of his bike, In the start of the semi, Tom Cameron, who makes the trip down from Washington with his dad Jack (also a Junior), took a bad spill exiting. turn two and got taken to Gardena Hospital. His condition dicln't I()ok good but as w~ go to press we've spent 30 minutes being transferred all over that hospital oy phone' trying to find Torn until the operator finally got tired and pulled the plug on us. Unbelievably, the Juniots crashed again on the restart, but they finaJly did get the race off, with Arlette Smith leading them all through the first turn, and Steve Oort taking first away 'and keeping it. Arlette did one hell of a fine job turning back or passing back all comers after the second spot until finally Steve Karsten got it. but it gave Arlette a transfer to the main. In the main, Rich Arnaiz the high point Junior for the year couldn't get his bike to fire so Bob Cunnington moved in as first alternate, Off they went with the early. leaders Derek Land, Jeff McDaniel and Danny Perkins doing things like going down the main chute three abreast. Perkins got a bit anxious and found himself behind Jeff McDaniel and Steve Oort; OOrt had been coming up like something nasty was chasing him. By Maureen Lee Photos by Dan Mahony GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 26 The high groove at Ascot is a lonely place, riders ~sually go there only by mistake an.d it's not fun up by the wall in the marbles. But there has been a handful of superstars over the years· who will roam there at will howling out of the ~ol'th tu;n and . ' . passmg on the outsIde up
