II The Pro series is now underway at OClR. Throughout the season R.A.C.E. has been getting excel-, lent response from the Beginner, Junior and Intermediate racers. However, the Pro participation ha' been a lillie less than desired. So Ihe promoters have gOllen ragelher with several of the more generous shops and for ranight and the next three weeks there will be a series for Ihe Pro racer. The man who comes Out of it best pointswise will pick up S!>OO! Tonight there were a few visiting Pros and soon the word will be out so even more should be on hand for next week. The 12!>, 2!>0 and 500cc Pros were still combined and in the first mora some real excitement was taking place. SCali Cavness got out ahead and led on his Suzuki 400. Todd Peterson was after him and so was Dave Beplings. Then Peterson dropped out. Cavness was so close to Todd's bike that hi footpeg went into Todd's wheel and pulled out Peterson's spokes. Soon Cavness dropped out because his frame cracked apart and his front wheel was raked out so much that it became a drag bike. Juan Benavidez got by Behlings and those two led it all ahead of new Pro Don Gibbons. Peterson and his dad didn't give it up but instead slapped on another wheel set-up that was taken off from their L25cc bike. It worked fine and Todd went on to win the final mota ahead of Benavidez and Don Gibbons. On the 2f>Occ Pro results it was Benavidez, Peterson, Gibbons and David Behlings. SCali Cavness gOt some tie downs and strapped his frame up so that he was able to take a lap in the final maLO and then pushed his bike over the line. He did this so that he would pick up points that would add up at the end of the series. In Lhe 125cc Pro action Micky Dymond aced out long time Pro Gary Denton_ Gary won the firSl mota but Dymond got the second. It should be mentioned thaI Denton hurt his wrist and was out of action for a long time. Results MINI 50: 1. Newton Acevedo (Suzl. 2. Jason CoUler IVaml. MINI BEG DIV 1: ,. Mike Mart,n lHon); 2. SEPT. 10 Stu Peters announced that this season of mo.tocross racing at Ascot Park will continue to go through the end of October. After that Lhe rains will lake over and will put an end to all of the local night races. The Orange Show Fairgrounds '~ supposed to open in January and TIght now a new track is being made up. Newton Acevedo is a star in {he !>Dcc Mini Imermediate class and he took two firsts over Prax Cruz. In the 80cc Mini Junior race ewton took a sixth overall and has a way to go before he can beat these riders. John Davis was the fastest man in that class ahead of Dan Carpenter and Sherman Johnson. The 12!>cc Intermediate class was unpredictable. Mark Allen looked like he was going to take it overall as he won the fir t mOta ahead of Craig Westergaard and Paul Ellis. Allen placed poorly in the final mota. where Mark Harpwood was lhe winner and ~his 5econd mota score was certainly an Improvement over his seventh in the mota before. Mitch Davis was after him this time in second while Weslergaard took a fine third. When il was all tallied up the winners lurned out this way: Westergaard, Allen, Harpwood and Davis. Jim Thomson looked good on his Yamaha bUl even though I-Je got good starts Ted Hamner ended on lap. Hamner took two firsts over the c1osely-' following Th9mson. These two led the 250cc Junior division two class and on the official results it ended up Hamner. Thomson. Rodney Jaramillo and Allen Padilla. Results MINI 50 JR: 1. Jason Jones (Suzl; 2. Brand managed to put a little distance between himself and Holbrook, but it was Cates who was making good use of every lap. By the founh lap, Cates had made his move on Coleman and Holbrook and was now running in second. After eight and a half laps -Cates had worked his way around Brand to take the lead, leaving Brand and Holbrook to battle for the second and lhird place spots. The second mota found Holbrook out [rant, but Cates was a close second and mavin'! Brand was stuck way back in eighth and his chances for a win weren't looking too good, but by the fourth lap. Brand had moved his red machine into the third place spot behind Holbrook. It looked as though Cates had the win in the bag until a rear flat tire bumped him all the way back to fifth place. Wilh Cates out of the way, the race was on for first place money between Brand and Holbrook. Brand stayed right with' Holbrook into e~ery _lurn and over every jump and with only a lap to go, Holbrook was still holding. onto f1l'St by a slim margin. As they came into the final tum ~fore the checkered flag, Holbrook slid out in the comer giving Brand the win with a 2-1 score. Holbrook finished with a 3-2 for second overall and Cates took home third place money with a 1-5 finish. The 2!>Occ Intermediates found Aurelio Siracusa (Kaw) pulling the holeshot over Scott Hodgson (Yam) and Mark Branch (Suz) in the first mota. Branch settled for a solid third while Siracusa and Hodgson were busy dicing it out. Siracusa had managed to hold Hodgson behind him and with only. two laps to go, things were lookmg good for Siracusa, when sud.denly Hodgson made his move, takmg the lead and the first mota win. The second moto looked like an instant replay with Siracusa out in fronl and Hod~n in hot pursuit with Branch running in third. Siracusa had a slight lead over Hodgson until he lost ~ontrol coming off the scorekeeper's Jump and ended up taking soil samples. With Siracusa now running back in the fourth place spot, Hodgson was assured the overall victory with Branch finishing with a 3-2 for second place honors and Siracusa took third with a 2-4 score.
