The ,battle many believed would materialize between reigning Trans-USA Champ Kent Howerton and Bob Hannah never happened. Howerton had the flu the week before the tace, and he used every bit of his energy 10 place fourth in moto one before collapsing afler Ihe checkered flag. Kent went into the scorer's DNF column in moto IWO when exhaustion and nausea overlook him early in the race. Hannah was fasl, bUI nol fasl enough. He moved through Ihe pack in bOlh motos, and the second time OUI resorted to some of his berserk moves and feel off Ihe pegs antics 10 close and pass. A 6-4 score gave Hannah fourth overall. Two veterans that once again showed their Sluff were Marly Tripes and Marty Smith. Tripes lookl'd like someone threw a switch on him when Hannah came up behind. The Typhoon blasted from mid-pack to third in both mOlOS. Smilh trailed Barnell in moto IWO and never fallered, but a DNF in moto one lefl him oul of the top placings. Brad Lackey, America's lOp 500cc World MX contender, had a poor day, carding II th in moto one and OUI of the lOp 20 in moto IwO.
