Iqualifier Cunnington taking over on
'b~ap two. The Oilzall rider then can·
tinued unimp"dt"d to the flag, winning
~qe Champion Yamaha trophy by a
huge margin. Sullivan ran second
before drupping out three laps into the
(race. From there the fight for runner·
up honors was fought by jeff Allison,
. Steve Oort and Michigan's Todd
_ Smith. Their freight train continued,
with Allison holding second through
'the middle stages of the race, Oort
appearing to control it in the late laps,
and then Smith seizing it on the final
)ap. Oort was third with Allison fourth.
Arlette Smith was fifth.
Semis
Ronnie jones and Bill Schaeffer
were going at it for the early first semi
lead. but then Bill Labrie and john
'Wincewicz were in the two transfer
spots. Midway through the race Wince·
wicz took the lead and finished tht"re
with Labrie taking second. jones was
third with Steve Monger edging joe
Wilson and Rob Crabbe for fourth.
"The second semi's final eight laps
turned into a draft/pass fest for Lance
jones a nd Scott Pa rker as they
swapped the lead often. On ·the last
lap jones trailed Parker going into the
final turn. but got a better drive off it
and nipped Parker at the finish line.
Wayne Rainey finished third ~ith
StOlt Drake fourth.
