Moviug riKbt aIoDg, I became suspicious of the ew:nt bcnUlle DOt one person knew where to go, how to get to the pm. or generally what was goiag on. Track. preparation was great. in fact. too great. They brought tile water truck.. tractors and graders OlIt after almost every race, needed or not. This, combined with one of the Iongat and most boring speeches ever made at a bike race, made for one long, IODg day . Suggestion: Get a qualified motorcycle club to run the race efficiently, and relegate the EIb to what they do best. collecting money for bot dogs. Keep the same track. configuration, but let at least one bump appear before the tractor squad is unleashed. Last, but not least, eliminate the kind of flagrant rip-offs that selling !bole phony programs represented. o 00 0') .-I WIST .-I I-< I1J ..0 o ..... Must have been one colorful and interesting trip. 4 Women's MX growing This is a love letter, of SOrts, to Cycle News from the AMA Women's MX National Championships. We are a new and struggling event. You've been our friend and constant supponer from the beginning. We raced and made up for small numbers by limit· less enthusiasm and competitivness. You covered our races as serious events. You never wrote "Powder Puff' stories. You gave us respect and respectability. Others who helped us this year include Scientific Drilling Controls of Irvine, U.S. Suzuki. Russ Darnell MX Schools, ND plugs. MXL goggles, Oakley Products. Super Seer, D.LD, Hi·Point, Torsten Hallman Racing, and Lemon Grove Cycle Supply. To them we humbly offer our appreciation. We are now on ABC's Wide World of Sports and have some exciting new events in the future. It takes 50 'many people to keep a sport alive. You have all given women's MX new strength. We won't let you down. Thanks from all of us. VICKI MILLER HAAG Promoter, AMA Women's MX Nationals Lemon Grove, CA Help the Duck: Join CORVA CORVA has a new program that you should know about. But first I would like to say a few words about a group of very special people: the officers and members of CORVA. For the last 10 years, these people have been fighting to preserve our rights to use public lands. They have fought many battles, and won a fair number of victories. During this time they have buill a state·wide association, representing all facets of 0 RV activity. CORVA has become a strong and effective voice for the off-roader. no matter what kind of vehicle he uses. This has only been accomplished with the expenditure of vast amounts of time. effort. and money. The b'attle with the BLM over the California Desert ~ put a severe "dent" in CORVA's resources. (CORVA doesn't have a $45,000 Legal Defense Fund or $60,000 in T·Bills. When CORVA joins a battle, CORVA uses every penny available to win. 'Nothing is held back..) MOlt of CORVA's "income" is derived from membership fees. Several CORVA officers met with the phaniom Duck. on the day he filed I his lawsuit against the Bureau. They were convinced that this action offers an opportunity to demonstrate the true nature of the BLM's actions in California. On September 6, 1980, CORVA's Board of Directors voted to help fund the Duck.'s action. by donatiDg one-third of all new membership fees co11ected over the next two and one-half months to the Duck.. I salute the officers and memben of CORVA. they have done themselves proud. I urge you to help both the Phantom Duck. and CORVA. Their "Go for It.. spirit deserves your support. Here is how. For every new membership (individual/family: $15) that CORVA receives from this program between September IS and November l!9, 1980, CORVA wiD donate $5 to the Phantom Duck. of the Desen LegaI Defense Fund. (The money will be presented to the Duck on the morning of November l!9. somewhere near Barstow. California.) So. for $15 you can send several bucks to the Duck., help CO~VA fund its programs, and gain aD the benefits of CORVA membership at a. "cut rate" price. I think it is an excellent deal. For applications or more information contact CORVA (P.O. Box l!SI. Mira Lorna. CA 917Sl!) or caD the Infonnation Hot Line (714/ 68S-0l!86). Now is your chance to get involved. Do It! ' THUMPER FREAK l!15/86l!·597S P.S. I'm CORVA - and proud ofit. I was totally flabbergasted upon reading a recenl issue of Cycle N",.s to note that you had invited the Phantom Duck of the Desert and friends to a BLM-sponaored Barstow to Vegas Trail Ride 0Yfi Thanksgiving weekend. It was not written as such, but the innuendo was plain. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for this kind gesture on your pan. I am sure there will be a great many people interelted in riding the IDtUmountain Power Project transmiIIion line corridor from Barstow to Las Vegas. legaIly. You can be ....red that I will be there along with the Phantom Dud of the Desert and hopefully 1000 other people, per your invitation. Of course, group5 of IesI than 49 people will be maintained, 10 that an event ~t will not be needed. If one IS called for, I am assuming the BLM will take care of it. My group will probably consist of 10. We will be at the same old place, well of Interstate IS at the Alvord Road overpass, Saturday, November l!9. By the way, we have already made our botd reservations in Las Vegas. I hope 10 see you there. Thanks again. SON OF DESERT DUCK P.S. WiD the Bureau of Land Manag=tent be publishing route maps? WA Elks lIf:Iow not SO great While in California for a vinta~ auto race at Laguna Seca. I accepted an invitation to go to the EIlts/Ramblers benefit race. Great track. good riders, but what a bummer! For starters I bought a program for. a buck and a half, only to find ads from front to rear - no schedule. no rider information, and no refund when I gave it back to the vendor.
